The world of Miraculous is growing, especially when Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening will finally be released. This is one of the most anticipated films in the entire Miraculous canon because of how it seeks to explore certain stories that the series is yet to explore. Of course, the fact that it is a musical is also a nice touch. So, with that said, when is Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening going to be released?
Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening will be released in France on August 3, 2022. There are also claims that it will have a July 28, 2022 release in Germany. Meanwhile, in other international locations like South Africa and probably other countries, it is set to be released on December 2, 2022.
The fact that it took a while for Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening to have a release date is pretty surprising because of the fact that most movies tend to have release dates early. That said, the movie is pretty close to its French release date. As such, let’s look at what we know about the film.
Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening Release Date
One of the shows that kids and adults alike love is Miraculous, which is an animated series that follows the exploits of masked superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir. Set in the city of Paris, the series explores the adventures that the heroes go through while attempting to stop the evil deeds of the main antagonist named Hawk Moth, who is secretly Cat Noir’s father, Gabriel Agreste.
The series is very successful in that it is set to have seven seasons. Of course, due to its high demand, Miraculous is set to have a movie that seeks to add to the lore of the entire Miraculous storyline. Created by Jeremy Zag, the movie is entitled Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening, which he revealed at ComiKon in Istanbul back in 2018. Later that year, it was revealed that the film would be released in 2021.
Of course, we do know that it hasn’t been released yet because of the fact that we are already in 2022. However, the delay was the result of the COVID-19 pandemic that has been sweeping the planet since 2020. As such, it is easy to understand why the release has been pushed. Nevertheless, when is the new release date of Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening?
As of this writing, the release date in France is August 3, 2022, and that means that it is nearing its release date even though it has just been announced. Of course, the movie was in production for a long time due to the delays caused by the pandemic. That means that the sudden announcement of its release date may not be surprising to the fans of this movie.
Nevertheless, fans were confused about its release date before the announcement because of the fact that the release date for South Africa had already been announced earlier. Its South African release date is on December 2, 2022, and that confused fans because they were wondering whether or not the movie will be released in France before it will be released in South Africa.
But after the announcement that the release date in France will be on August 3, 2022, the confusion had already been cleared up. Still, there are reports that suggest that Germany will see an earlier release date on July 28, 2022, although there is no confirmation regarding that release date.
Considering that South Africa will see the movie on December 2, it is also possible that the other international locations will see a December 2 release date as well. We are not sure whether or not the movie will be released in America earlier but there is a possibility that it Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening will hit US theaters sometime between August 3 and December 2.
Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening Trailer
Right now, Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening doesn’t have a trailer that’s available because the details about this movie are kind of scarce for now. However, Jeremy Zag has released some teasers about the film through his Instagram account. You can find those teasers in this video:
Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening Plot
As of now, the entire plot of Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening hasn’t been revealed because the details about this film seem to be minimal. Nevertheless, there are some details that we know based on what has been revealed about it so far.
There are reasons to believe that the film’s plot will cover a good part of the origin story of the Miraculous universe as well as the ending to the upcoming fifth season of Miraculous. As such, considering that this shows the ending to season 5, there is still a good chance that the film’s release date will be pushed.
Also, there are hints that the movie will be focusing on an aspect that hasn’t been explored a lot in the series—Gabriel Agreste’s past. We know that Gabriel, AKA Hawk Moth, is looking to take control of both the Ladybug and the Cat Miraculouses so that he can alter reality as he pleases. And the reason for wanting to alter reality goes back to what happened to his wife, Emilie Agreste, who fell into a coma.
As such, a good part of Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening will address Gabriel’s character arc and whether or not he has always been the same person before his wife fell into a coma. We all know that his relationship with Adrien became sour after Emilie’s fate because he became strict and harsh. In that regard, the film might allow us to see the man he was before and how his wife’s state played a role in his character transformation.
Because Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening is a musical that follows a format that may be somewhat different from the series, it is described as a mix between Spider-Man and Frozen. That’s because there will be a lot of superhero action involving the holders of the Miraculouses on top of all of the singing that might happen in the middle of the movie.

Is Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening Canon?
At this point, while the details of Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening may be scarce, we do believe that it is part of the entire Miraculous canon. Only Jeremy Zag is involved in the creation of this film as the original creator, Thomas Astruc, didn’t take part in it. But the fact that Astruc isn’t involved doesn’t take away the possibility that it could be canon.
As mentioned, Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening explores a good part of the origins story of the universe while also focusing on Gabriel Agreste’s character arc. That means that it doesn’t encroach upon the already established lore that we have seen in the canon universe thus far. This could lead to the high probability that Ladybug & Cat Noir: Awakening is indeed canon.
