‘Lanterns’ Is Not Tied to DCU’s Larger Storytelling Plan, But Aims for Multi-Season Run Says Chris Mundy

‘Lanterns’ is easily one of the most exciting projects for fans to look forward to in DCU’s Chapter 1. Initially, many were surprised by its description as a grounded, Earth-bound adventure in the vein of True Detective and Slow Horses, but the anticipation has been steadily growing.

The show stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, two of the most popular Green Lanterns out there. We can also expect Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner to make an appearance considering we’ve already seen him in the role in ‘Superman’ set leaks and trailer.

Now writer and showrunner Chris Mundy sat down with Vanity Fair and revealed a couple of important things regarding the show. He noted that the show doesn’t directly adapt any specific storyline, but it is deeply rooted in Green Lantern’s rich history.

Our Lanterns have the rings and all the power they bring, and other characters and aspects of the lore are going to show up or be name-checked. But it’s a series that explores who these guys are when they’re on the job and when they’re out of uniform. It’s designed to be accessible for people who don’t know the mythology, but hopefully really satisfying for people that know it backwards and forwards.

Mundy also cleared up that ‘Lanterns’ exists as its own standalone story, separate from other DC Studios projects. While not currently part of a larger interconnected plan, Season 1 is designed as a complete, self-contained narrative with the potential to expand into multiple seasons.

We’re not part of a larger storytelling plan right now. Season one is designed to be its own, complete season of television that, hopefully, will become many seasons of television.

The show currently doesn’t have a set release date, but we’re excited to announce that it has officially entered production. A first look at Chandler and Pierre has also been revealed.
