‘Lanterns’ Just Revealed a Major Secret Tying Sheriff Kerry Kane to Batman’s Gotham City

HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ has spent its first two episodes building a reputation for burying its biggest DC Universe secrets in the quietest corners of the frame. Rather than leaning on flashy cameos or obvious Easter eggs, the series created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King has preferred to let sharp-eyed fans do the detective work themselves, one overheard phone call or background prop at a time.

That approach paid off almost immediately with Rushville Sheriff Kerry Kane, played by Kelly Macdonald, who felt just slightly out of place as a small-town lawman from her very first scene alongside Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. In the show’s premiere, a brief phone call where Kane told an unseen caller to “tell Barb I said hey” was enough to send fans hunting for a possible connection to Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon and his daughter, Barbara.

That theory picked up serious momentum in episode two, titled “Trust Fall,” which directly confirmed Kane isn’t originally from Rushville at all, but from Gotham City itself. The reveal came during a conversation with Hal Jordan, who noted she didn’t exactly carry herself like typical small-town law enforcement, a comment Kane didn’t exactly deny.

The Gotham reveal lands with extra significance once you factor in Kane’s full name. In DC Comics lore, the Kane family is one of Gotham’s oldest and wealthiest bloodlines, most notably producing Kate Kane, the hero known as Batwoman, and connecting by blood to Bruce Wayne himself through his mother, Martha Wayne, who was born Martha Kane.

That family tie has fans increasingly convinced Sheriff Kane’s Gotham background is more than a passing detail, especially paired with her earlier “tell Barb I said hey” comment and a moment in the same episode where she flatly states, “I can’t do this again,” while discussing jurisdiction, hinting she may have clashed with costumed vigilantes before. Between the surname, the Gordon-adjacent phone call, and her clear familiarity with handling situations beyond a typical sheriff’s scope, the show appears to be laying groundwork for something bigger tied to Gotham down the line.

This isn’t the first Gotham-adjacent detail ‘Lanterns’ has slipped into its background. Episode one featured John Stewart walking past a Janus Cosmetics poster, a brand that in DC Comics is owned by Roman Sionis, the businessman-turned-villain known as Black Mask. A promotional photo from the show’s San Diego Comic-Con activation also reportedly featured a prop copy of the Gotham Gazette, the city’s long-running in-universe newspaper.

None of this is expected to mean Batman himself is showing up in ‘Lanterns’ anytime soon, since the character hasn’t even been cast yet within James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. Instead, these scattered details point toward a much slower, more deliberate expansion of Gotham’s presence across the DCU, consistent with the grounded, mystery-driven tone the show has favored since its premiere.

With ‘Lanterns’ continuing its weekly rollout on HBO and HBO Max, and Gunn previously teasing that the season’s final stretch contains some of its biggest reveals, Sheriff Kane’s Gotham ties seem unlikely to stay a background detail for much longer.
