Live-Action ‘Naruto’ Leak Teases Land of Waves Story and Big Changes for Sakura and the Nine-Tails
Anime fans have been waiting a long time for Hollywood to get the live-action ‘Naruto‘ movie right, and the project is finally starting to take shape. Lionsgate officially closed a deal on February 23, 2024, for Destin Daniel Cretton, director of ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and ‘Short Term 12’, to write and direct the adaptation of Masashi Kishimoto’s manga.
The project has momentum on its side. Cretton is co-writing the film with Tasha Huo, Charles Melton has signed on as Kakashi Hatake, and a worldwide search for actors to play Team 7 began in July with Kishimoto’s blessing, ahead of filming planned for the first half of 2027.
Now, a new leak may have revealed what the story will look like. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the first film will adapt the manga’s opening arc, with ‘Naruto: Mission to the Land of Waves’ reportedly being considered as the title, though Lionsgate hasn’t confirmed any of the details.
Per the leak, the main characters will remain 12 to 13 years old, matching their ages in the original story. That would put the film squarely in the era of Naruto’s very first serious mission alongside Sasuke and Sakura.
In the manga, that mission sees the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, hand Team 7 a C-rank job escorting a bridge builder named Tazuna back to the Land of Waves after Naruto demands something more exciting than finding runaway cats. The team is soon ambushed by the Demon Brothers, kicking off the dangerous adventure.
The leak also claims Naruto will have a strong interest in ninja history, while Sasuke will have feelings for Sakura and Naruto reportedly won’t. That’s a notable shift for a central trio whose dynamic fans know well.
Sakura appears to be getting the biggest overhaul. According to the report, she will be more powerful from the start and already have her abilities, and she will come from a wealthy family, with her father having died in Kurama’s attack and her mother portrayed as snobbish.
The lore surrounding the Nine-Tails is reportedly changing too. In this version, becoming a Jinchuriki will require a specific bloodline, and Naruto inherits his mother’s, making him the only viable host for Kurama as she is dying.
These changes are likely to be among the most debated. Knight Edge Media has also reported that the film is expected to be a hard PG-13, with plenty of swearing and Marvel-esque humor, while staying very faithful to the source material despite some tweaks.

While fans may be wary of some reported changes, the manga’s creator has been enthusiastic about Cretton since day 1. “To put it simply, the live-action ‘Naruto’ is bound to be a film with spectacular action and profound drama,” Kishimoto said in the official announcement.
The creator explained that he became convinced Cretton was the right choice after seeing his talent for building solid dramas about people. That emphasis on character could explain why the film is reportedly rooted in Naruto’s earliest days.
Cretton himself has hinted at that focus. Speaking with Rolling Stone while promoting ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, he said his approach would be no different than anything else he’s done, with reports suggesting the story centers on Naruto grappling with his status as an outsider.
The film is backed by a strong producing team, including Cretton and Jeyun Munford through Hisako, Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, and Jeremy Latcham. Production is reportedly set to begin in early 2027 in the United Kingdom.
Cretton’s commitment to the project is so firm that Sony is reportedly waiting on him for ‘Spider-Man 5’. For now, the film still doesn’t have a release date, and until Lionsgate weighs in, these story details remain firmly in rumor territory.
