Disney’s live-action ‘Tangled’ has moved through production quickly. Filming began in June at the Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante, Spain, with more shooting across the Basque Country and Catalonia, and the cast and crew have now celebrated the end of production.

Screenwriter Michael Montemayor, who wrote the film with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, confirmed the wrap by sharing celebration photos on Threads. One of those images has fans talking about a notable change to one of the original film’s most memorable scenes.

The photos reportedly include a page from Kathryn Hahn’s script for Mother Gothel’s death scene. According to a Maxblizz report on the images, the new version gives Gothel a line that doesn’t appear in the 2010 animated film: as she begins to age, she tells Rapunzel, “I loved you.”

The script page was also shared on X by @Antoine_F2 on October 31, along with a photo of the scene’s dagger. Disney hasn’t officially commented on the changes, and the script page hasn’t been independently verified. The new line could change how audiences see the villain’s final moment. In the original, Gothel’s end is focused on her shock at suddenly losing her youth.

Much of the sequence seems to follow the animated film. According to the reported script, Gothel stabs Flynn Rider to keep him away from Rapunzel, and Rapunzel then pulls out the dagger. Rapunzel still sings the original healing incantation as she tries to save Flynn. Flynn then uses the dagger to cut her hair, which causes Gothel to age rapidly.

It’s within that moment that Gothel’s new line appears. The change suggests the remake may take a slightly more emotional approach to the relationship between Rapunzel and the woman who raised her.

The news has sparked debate online. Some fans like the idea of giving Gothel more emotional depth, while others argue that the character should stay a straightforward villain who kept Rapunzel only because her hair kept her young.

That debate isn’t new for Disney’s live-action remakes, which often try to add context to classic villains. Until the film arrives, it’s unclear how the line will be framed on screen. Hahn has already shown she’s having fun with the role. At D23 in August, she joked from the stage that she loves playing Mother Gothel, describing the villain as stunning, hilarious, and generous to a fault, and only overprotective because she cares so much.

That playful description suggests Hahn may bring some warmth and humor to a character who is usually seen as purely manipulative. The reported new line could fit that more complicated take.

Teagan Croft stars as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim plays Flynn Rider. Diego Luna joins as Hawthorne, a new character created for the film, while Caitríona Balfe plays Queen Arianna and Elliot Cowan plays King Frederic. Michael Gracey, who directed ‘The Greatest Showman’, is behind the camera. Disney showed first-look footage at D23, and the film is set to open in theaters on March 31, 2028.
