‘Madame Web’ Hits Major Streaming Success on Netflix Despite Severe Cinematic Loss

‘Madame Web’ represents the latest installment in the SSU, notably devoid of Spider-Man, and unfortunately, the film faced resounding failure both commercially and critically. The lead actress even confessed her reluctance to pursue similar projects in the future, while the rest of the cast distanced themselves from the movie.

Despite its shortcomings, ‘Madame Web’ emerged as a meme-worthy sensation, echoing the fate of another notorious SSU film, ‘Morbius.’ The movie, like its counterpart, garnered substantial attention, prompting curiosity from audiences unaware of its existence or the SSU. Ultimately, ‘Madame Web’ defied expectations by finding success through streaming platforms.

‘Madame Web’ made its Netflix debut, swiftly claiming the number one spot on Wednesday’s edition of the Netflix Top 10 Movies list just a day after its premiere on the platform.

Fan reactions have been…mixed. Many have observed that viewers were either hate-watching the movie or were utterly perplexed by its content. On social media, some users cautioned against fueling further interest in the latest SSU offering, drawing parallels to the phenomenon surrounding ‘Velma,’ a Scooby-Doo animated series. Despite widespread disdain, ‘Velma’ garnered so much hate-watching attention that it secured a second season renewal, a decision many find baffling given its perceived lack of quality.

Some fans raised concerns that heightened interest in the movie could potentially prompt the studio to consider a theatrical re-release, mirroring the events surrounding ‘Morbius.’ Following its debut on Netflix, ‘Morbius’ also claimed the number-one spot, sparking a wave of ironic meme culture that ironically praised the film. This phenomenon led Sony to re-release it in 1,000 theaters on June 3, 2022. However, this theatrical run proved to be unsuccessful, earning only $280,000 over the weekend.

Despite this setback, there’s no doubt that the SSU will continue to expand its universe. ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ is set to hit theaters on October 25, 2024, followed by ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ scheduled for release on December 13, 2024.
