Madame Web: Release Date for the Sony’s Marvel Movie Revealed
After Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius, three films that received mixed to negative reviews, Sony is still believing in their own cinematic universe featuring Marvel characters. It’s safe to say that Venom 3 is on its way, although it seems unlikely that Morbius will get a sequel at this moment, following its critical and commercial failure.
Two upcoming movies set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, as it’s officially called, are Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. Kraven the Hunter is currently in production and it’s set to be released in January 2023. And, according to the newest report released by Sony, Madame Web is now set to hit theaters on July 7, 2023.
Dakota Johnson has been cast to star in the titular role earlier this year, and Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney will also star in an undisclosed role. S. J. Clarkson is set to direct the movie from the screenplay written by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless, the same duo who wrote Morbius. Let’s hope they’ll do a better job with this film.
With three movies released so far, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe grossed $1.442 billion worldwide. Both Venom movies were commercially successful, despite the mixed reception from the critics, but Morbius didn’t manage to do the same. It’s hard to say is it because Morbius was delayed no less than seven times before it was released (which reminds us of the situation that Fox had with its New Mutants movie), or the negative reception and the fact that Morbius isn’t such a known character among Marvel fans like Venom always was. We’ll see how will that affect upcoming movies, especially Madame Web because it was announced that the movie will follow source material very loosely.
The production is expected to begin soon. Starring Dakota Johnson, Madame Web will be released on July 7, 2023.
