Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy, recently talked about a dark and emotional story he made up for his character. This came up during his interview on NPR’s “Bullseye With Jesse Thorn,” while he was doing press for his new project, The Life of Chuck, a Stephen King adaptation directed by Mike Flanagan.

During the conversation, Hamill shared how hard it was for him to understand Luke’s actions in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The movie, released in 2017, shows Luke living in isolation, having turned his back on the Force after a tragic fallout with his nephew, Ben Solo.

Hamill admitted that he had trouble connecting with this version of Luke, so he asked director Rian Johnson if he could come up with his own story to help him get into character.

“I said, ‘Can I make up my own backstory of why he is the way he is? I don’t want to just say, you know, that I have bumped and I have brain damage,’” Hamill told Thorn. “He said, ‘Yeah, do whatever you want.’ So I made up a much, much darker backstory that I thought could justify him being that way.”

In Hamill’s version, Luke falls in love, gets married, and has a child. But tragedy strikes when the young child accidentally activates a lightsaber and is killed. Luke’s wife, unable to cope with the grief, takes her own life. After this heartbreaking event, Luke disconnects from the Force completely.

Hamill explained that he based this idea on real stories in the U.S. about children who are accidentally hurt or killed when they find guns left unattended. He pointed to research from everytownresearch.org, which reports that in 2025 alone, there have already been 87 accidental shootings by children, and more than 400 happened in 2023.

“That resonated with me so deeply,” he said. “But he [Johnson] didn’t have the time to tell a backstory like that, I’m guessing.”

Although The Last Jedi got strong reviews from critics, it also sparked a lot of debate among fans. Many viewers were shocked by Luke’s choices in the movie, especially the part where he briefly considers killing young Ben Solo after seeing a vision of the destruction Ben might cause in the future. That moment was one of the reasons why Hamill had a hard time at first.

Still, Hamill was clear that he didn’t have any problems with Rian Johnson as a filmmaker.

“I’ve heard comments from fans who think that I somehow dislike Rian Johnson,” he said. “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Even though his dark backstory for Luke never made it to the screen, Hamill used it to give more meaning to the way his character acted in the film. Whether fans agree or not, it shows how deeply he cared about understanding the role.
