During Disney+ Day 2021, it was confirmed that something new was in the making, a new animated show called ‘Marvel Zombies’ for Disney+. Zeb Wells is writing and producing it. The show was imagined as a spinoff of the ‘What If…?’ episode called ‘What If… Zombies!?’.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, they said the show will be for mature audiences (rated TV-MA) and will start airing in 2024. Zeb Wells said in an interview on October 8, 2022, that the first season will have four episodes. On November 28, 2023, Iman Vellani said she was joining the cast. She’ll be the voice of Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, who’s one of the main characters.

We don’t know much about the series plot, except that it won’t directly follow the famous comic storyline. But it seems like there will be a lot of violence and action. Fans are excited because it could show many different things on screen. Brad Winderbaum, who works at Marvel Studios, talked about this in an interview with IGN.

In terms of more mature animation, yeah, we’re making a ‘Marvel Zombies’ show right now that is pretty intense that’s for sure a TV-MA show. And again, it’s trying to honor the comics. And what was so great about the comics was it not pulling its punches. That’s certainly what we’re going for on that project also.

According to recent reports, ‘Marvel Zombies’ will follow the same release pattern as ‘Echo’ under the Marvel Spotlight banner. The spotlight series typically features standalone and character-driven stories, and we can infer that these projects also have a more mature tone.

Marvel Studios is shifting its focus toward mature content and animation in the coming years. The positive reception of ‘Echo’ and the successful debut of ‘X-Men ‘97’, which received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, contributed to this strategic shift.
