Marvel Studios has spent most of the year building anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ piece by piece, and the marketing machine shows no signs of slowing down. The campaign so far has included the Comic-Con trailer, footage from D23, the Infinity Vision teaser, and fresh scenes tacked onto the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Encore re-release. Each drop has given fans just enough to keep the theories spinning without giving away the full picture.

The most recent big moment came at D23, where Kevin Feige took the stage alongside Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell to unveil a special look at the film. That footage wasn’t entirely new, though, since fans in Hall H had already seen it at San Diego Comic-Con back in July. With the release date creeping closer, the question became where Marvel would strike next.

The answer turned out to be baseball. A new look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will drop on Friday, debuting during Game 1 of the World Series on FOX and putting the film in front of an enormous live audience. MLB confirmed the partnership with a short video teasing that something is on the way and urging fans to tune in for an exclusive preview.

The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Pairing Fans Have Been Speculating About Just Got a Reality Check

The teaser itself is moody and cinematic. A giant Avengers logo glows green through storm clouds hanging over a packed stadium, while 5 MLB players stand with their backs to the camera, gazing up at it. Rays star Junior Caminero is among them, and his team takes the field in Game 1.

The timing also lands on a genuinely historic Fall Classic. Game 1 on October 23 pits the Rays against the Brewers, and Milwaukee is back in the World Series for the first time since 1982 after sweeping the two-time defending champion Dodgers in the NLCS. Neither franchise has ever won a World Series title, so Marvel is sharing the spotlight with plenty of real-life drama.

Fans hoping to catch the footage early might want to settle in for the long haul. ComicBook.com points out there’s almost no chance the preview airs right at the start of the broadcast, meaning viewers will likely have to sit through a few innings before Doom makes his appearance.

The World Series spot may not be the only surprise on the schedule. According to insider ProjectHurts, a new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer is set to arrive on October 23 at 9 AM EST, the same day as the game. Marvel hasn’t confirmed that trailer, so it should still be treated as a rumor.

That hasn’t stopped the speculation. Fans are already betting the new footage will reveal characters Marvel has been keeping under wraps, while others expect the focus to stay on Doctor Doom, possibly digging into his backstory and showing him battling heroes beyond Thor. Either way, the stormy teaser has done exactly what it was designed to do.

The stakes for this crossover are massive. The film unites the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Wakandans, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU in a brand-new role as Victor von Doom. Marvel’s pitch frames Doom as a villain determined to rewrite the multiverse in his own image.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film sees heroes from three different universes thrown onto a deadly collision course against a threat unlike anything they’ve faced. Marvel has already released 4 hero-focused teasers, one of which confirmed Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers, along with 2 full-length trailers.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18, sharing its opening day with ‘Dune: Part Three’, which sets up a blockbuster showdown at the box office. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is scheduled to follow on December 17 of the next year. If the World Series preview is any indication, Marvel plans to keep Doom front and center for every remaining week of the countdown.

Will you be tuning in to the World Series to catch the new Avengers: Doomsday footage?
