There is no doubt that Halo’s Master Chief is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time and is quite arguably right up there among the best game heroes since the start of the millennium. That said, there are a lot of things that people don’t know about Master Chief, and that’s where we are going to look at what we know about his age, birthday, height, and weight during all of the Halo games.
Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
Halo: Combat Evolved was released in 2001, and it marked the start of what was to become one of the most popular video game franchises of the new millennium. This was also the game that introduced Master Chief, the iconic armor-wearing hero that became the very same person who is synonymous with the Halo franchise because he is the face of the game.
At this point, Master Chief is somewhere around 41 years old, considering that this iconic hero was born on March 7, 2511. He might seem like he’s a bit too old for war, considering that soldiers are usually in their younger years at 20 to more 30 than 30 years old. However, Master Chief is one of the strongest human soldiers that Earth has to offer.
Regarded as humanity’s best hope against the Covenant, which are aliens that banded together to wage war against humans, Master Chief was trained since his childhood years to be a super-soldier that’s capable of fighting against bigger and stronger aliens. He can even be considered an entire battalion on his own.
The reason why he is so strong is that Master Chief stands at an impressive seven feet tall whenever he has his armor on. Without the armor, he is 6’10”, and that’s the height of your common NBA center. On top of that, he is 1,000 pounds whenever he has his armor on and is right around 287 pounds whenever he isn’t wearing the armor.
Master Chief is also an impressive athlete that moves like a smaller soldier because of the different experiments that were done to him when he was still a young boy. The experiments allowed him to grow to become bigger and stronger than most humans. On top of that, he also has better reflexes and is quicker than most other humans.
The hero was introduced during the events of the war against the Covenant in 2552. Master Chief’s mission is to destroy a superweapon called the Halo Ring, which was left by an ancient race called the Forerunners. Because the Covenant is looking for the Halo Ring, which has the capacity to destroy all of the sentient life forms in the galaxy, it is up to Master Chief to find and destroy this ancient weapon.
Halo 2 (2004)
After the events of Halo, Halo 2 happened. The game was released three years after the first Halo game and followed the events that happened right after Halo: Combat Evolved. That means that not a lot of time has passed since the conclusion of the first game. At this point, Master Chief is still 41 years old and still has the same physical attributes.
In Halo 2, we still follow Master Chief, who learned that the Covenant discovered the location of Earth and is now seeking to launch a full assault on the humans’ home planet. Master Chief returned to Earth to help humanity face the invasion that the Covenant launched.
While battling the Covenant on Earth, Master Chief learned that there was a second Halo superweapon that he needed to destroy because the Covenant was looking to exploit it. That was when he needed to team up with a Covenant deserted named the Arbiter to stop the superweapon, which the Prophet of Truth was looking to remotely activate through an installation called the Ark. The end of the game opens up the events of the next Halo game.
Halo 3 (2007)
Halo 3 is the conclusion of the original Halo trilogy, as it happens right after the events of Halo 3. It was released in 2007 and continues from where we last saw Master Chief at the events of Halo 2. In other words, even though six years of real time has passed from Halo: Combat Evolved to Halo 3, the stories take place in only a matter of days.
In Halo 3, we follow the events of Master Chief’s pursual of the Prophet of Truth, who sought to go to the Ark so that he could remotely activate the Halo superweapon from there. This forces Master Chief and the Arbiter to go to the end of the galaxy so that they can use a portal that would take them to the Ark.
When Master Chief reached the Ark, he was able to stop the Halo from activating by defeating the Arbiter of Truth. However, he still needed to save Cortana, as he fought through the wreckage and the remaining Covenant aliens to rescue his AI companion.
As Master Chief rescued Cortana, they made us of a Halo replacement that the Ark began to build on its own. However, because this Halo was still far from complete, the power of the Halo was only enough to destroy the Flood aliens that were close by, as the rest of the galaxy was spared from the power of the superweapon.
Shortly after destroying the Flood, Master Chief and Cortana escaped through a ship that ended up drifting in space. This ends the original Halo trilogy, as the players are left wondering what happens to Master Chief and Cortana from then on.
The original Halo trilogy happens in a matter of days. That means that they all occur in 2552. At that time, Master Chief is still the same 41-year old seven-foot super-soldier that has become the face of the Halo franchise.
Halo 4 (2012)
Halo 4 was released in 2012 and was now developed by a different studio. And while other Halo games were released during the five-year span between Halo 3 and Halo 4, none of those games featured Master Chief as the lead character.
The events of Halo 4 happen several years after the events of Halo 3. Master Chief was put into cryonic sleep for five years, as Cortana woke him up during the start of Halo 4 when the ship they were in was slowly drifting into a Forerunner installation. Considering that there is a five-year gap between the games, Master Chief is already 46 during the events of Halo 4. And because he was asleep for five years, he may have lost a few pounds.
While in the Forerunner installation called the Requiem, Master Chief and Cortana were looking for a way to contact home so that they could return. However, they ended up waking up an ancient Forerunner named the Didact, who has a deep-seated hatred for humanity. Upon waking up, the Didact went on to wage war against Earth as he headed towards the planet.
Luckily for humans, Master Chief was able to prevent him from doing so. However, Cortana had to sacrifice herself as the AI ended up “dying” as a result of their last-ditch effort to prevent the Didact from reaching Earth.
Halo 5: Guardians (2015)
Halo 5: Guardians takes place just shortly after the events of Halo 4, as Master Chief is now back on Earth and has reunited with his Blue Team. He also went on to resume command of his squad. Halo 5 takes place in 2558, which means that Master Chief is somewhere around 46 to 47 years old at this time. And whatever weight he might have lost during his five-year sleep from Halo 3 to Halo 4 must’ve been recovered after he was able to return to the planet.
During the events of Halo 5, Master Chief had visions of Cortana contacting him. The visions told him to go to a certain planet. Believing that his AI companion could still be alive, Master Chief decided to disobey orders. He and the rest of Blue Team went AWOL, as the UNSC publicly announced that Master Chief had died.
The UNSC also sent Jameson Locke and Fireteam Osiris after Master Chief and Blue Team to neutralize him or to take him back to Earth for his just punishment. Jameson Locke is a Spartan-IV soldier that is somewhere around 6’10” and is not that far off from Master Chief, who is still the bigger soldier between the two.
When Blue Team got to the planet called Meridian, they were able to find an ancient forerunner installation that took them to the Forerunner planet called Genesis. It was in Genesis that Master Chief discovered that Cortana had survived the events of Halo 4 by finding her way into the Domain, which is the Forerunner’s repository of knowledge.
However, because of the knowledge she gained, Cortana seemingly changed. She now wants to try to “maintain” peace in the galaxy by dispatching weapons called the Guardians, which the Forerunners created a long time ago. Her plan is to send the Guardians to the different reaches of the galaxy to maintain order.
Master Chief didn’t agree with this plan because he saw it as an authoritarian approach to peace. That was when Cortana imprisoned him and the rest of Blue Team. Fireteam Osiris eventually found Blue Team and learned about the circumstances surrounding Cortana. That was when Locke decided to help Master Chief out instead of neutralizing him.
However, both Blue Team and Fireteam Osiris decided to retreat, knowing for a fact that they couldn’t win against Cortana right then and there. This opens up the events of the newest game in the Halo franchise.
Halo Infinite (2021)
Halo Infinite, which was released near the end of 2021, is the latest game in the Halo saga. It continues the events of Halo 5, as the game takes place in 2560, which means that it has been two years since the end of the previous Halo game. At this point, Master Chief should be right around 49 years old, considering that he was born in 2511.
This time, the main enemies are aliens called the Banished, which are different alien races that formed a coalition against Cortana’s rule. However, the Banished also found themselves in a war against humanity.
The events of the game mostly take place in the ringworld called Zeta Halo. Halo Infinite opened up in 2559 when Master Chief lost to the Banished leader named Atriox. The Brute dropped him into space, where he was found by a UNSC ship after he was drifting in space for a total of six months.
When Master Chief was saved, he and the pilot worked together to fight the Banished. During the events of the game, Master Chief also found a new AI called The Weapon, which is simply a copy of Cortana. Meanwhile, the Banished teamed up with an ancient alien called the Harbinger, who was imprisoned on Zeta Halo along with other aliens called the Endless.
The original Cortana got captured by Atriox and decided to delete herself to prevent the Brute from using her and Zeta Halo. She destroyed Zet Halo in the process of deleting herself, as she said her farewells to Master Chief through a recorded message. She apologized for the mistakes that she made and told Master Chief to accept The Weapon just as he accepted her many years ago.
