‘Masters of the Universe’ Heroes Featurette Gives Eternia’s Mightiest Warriors Their Long-Overdue Moment in the Spotlight
Amazon MGM Studios has dropped a pair of brand-new featurettes ahead of the summer release of ‘Masters of the Universe’, and the one spotlighting the film’s heroic side is giving fans a whole lot to get excited about. The hero-focused featurette offers fresh looks at key characters including Teela, Man-At-Arms, and a number of fan-favourite Heroic Warriors fans have been waiting to see in action.
Beyond the core trio of He-Man, Teela, and Man-At-Arms, the footage digs deeper into the supporting roster with Roboto, Mekaneck, and Ram Man each getting their own moments to shine. Mekaneck gets to show off in a proper action sequence, and there is a notably fun exchange between Adam and Ram Man that plays out just before Ram Man does his thing in spectacular fashion. For long-time fans of the franchise, seeing those fan-favourite second-tier heroes finally rendered in live-action is a genuine treat.
Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam and He-Man, with Jared Leto taking on the role of Skeletor and Idris Elba playing Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms. Camila Mendes joins as Teela, captain of Eternia’s royal guard, while Morena Baccarin plays the Sorceress, guardian of the secrets of Castle Grayskull. The ensemble alone has been a major talking point since casting was confirmed, and the new footage only reinforces the sense that this is one of the most stacked blockbuster casts of the year.
The hero-focused featurette also includes a brief but ominous glimpse of Skeletor, who delivers the line “the universe shall quake in my shadow”, reinforcing his position as a formidable antagonist while hinting at the sheer scale of conflict audiences can expect when the film arrives. It is a clever piece of promotional design, weaving the villain into the heroes’ showcase to remind viewers just how high the stakes are for everyone on the side of Eternia.
The film is directed by Travis Knight, the filmmaker behind ‘Bumblebee’, from a screenplay by Chris Butler with additional contributions from Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and David Callaham, and it is set up as a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films. The first official trailer dropped in January and generated over 37 million views on YouTube, becoming the second most-popular video on Amazon MGM’s YouTube channel. That kind of early traction signals an audience that has been waiting a very long time for a worthy live-action version of the property.
Production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas told Empire magazine that the mission was to be “as purely faithful to the original ’80s animation as we possibly could without it getting distracting or silly.” Based on everything in the new footage, that commitment to the source material appears to be paying off in a big way, with the hero designs drawing strong reactions from fans online. ‘Masters of the Universe’ is scheduled to open in theaters on June 5, with Amazon MGM Studios handling domestic distribution in the United States and Canada.
