Matrix 5: Release Date, Trailer, Plot, Cast, and More
After almost twenty years of waiting, we’re getting a new Matrix movie. It’ll be the fourth one, called The Matrix Resurrections, and while we don’t know a lot about what the plot will be about, we know that some characters will be back that we thought were gone in the initial trilogy. After the Resurrections, fans are already asking themselves – will there be a Matrix 5?
Even before the release of Matrix 4, Warner Bros made it clear that they are open for Matrix 5 if Lana Wachowski (the writer) wants to do it. So, The Matrix Resurrections could be the resurrection of the entire franchise – perhaps even a new trilogy.
Therefore, regardless of how good or bad the fourth Matrix fares in box office numbers, we might be up for Matrix 5. I am super excited about the whole thing, and even although Matrix 4 isn’t yet in cinemas, let’s go a step further and think about what Matrix 5 could be about, what characters may appear, and when it might see the light of day.
Will There Be a Matrix 5?
As you probably already know, The Matrix Resurrections is hitting the big screen in late December 2021. The movie’s premiere had been postponed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic, but now we’ll finally get to see Neo and Trinity in action again (yes, they’ll both be back).
But, that’s not all. It seems that the studio is open to collaborating on yet another Matrix project in the future, regardless of how big of a box-office success The Matrix Resurrections will be.

Ann Sarnoff, CEO of WarnerMedia Studios, is more than happy to work on a sequel after The Matrix Resurrections. However, it depends not on the success of Matrix 4 but the willingness of its director to make another film. As Sarnoff said for Deadline: “Anytime Lana (Wachowski) wants to make a movie, we’re all in.”
Seeing how Denis Villeneuve’s Dune reboot was a huge success, and a sequel is all but confirmed, it wouldn’t be crazy to conclude that Matrix 5 will almost definitely happen. So, let’s check what we can expect out of it.
Matrix 5 Release Date
Considering that the production of Matrix 5 hasn’t even been confirmed, it’s hard to say when it will be released, let alone the exact date. What we can do is look at the previous Matrix movies to see how long the production lasted.
The first movie, The Matrix, hit the theaters in 1999. They always planned on making a trilogy. However, the second movie came out after four long years, in 2003. Interestingly enough, the third movie came out the same year.
The studio wanted to reduce costs by filming parts 2 and 3 simultaneously, but it all ended in a big fuss and confusion, so the third movie eventually flopped at the box office.
With that being said, it’s hard to determine when Matrix 5 might come out. The Matrix Resurrections is coming out on December 22, 2021, but it has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The release was initially scheduled for May 2021, while Warner Bros announced the production in late 2019. Filming began in February 2020, which means that the entire thing was supposed to wrap up from the announcement to the first screening in a year and a half.
So, even if the production of Matrix 5 starts right after Matrix 4 comes out in theaters, the earliest we can expect the fifth movie to be finished and hit the cinemas is mid-to-late 2023. The more realistic release date would be somewhere in 2024.
Matrix 5 Trailer
We don’t have a trailer for Matrix 5 yet, since not even the fourth movie is in cinemas. However, judging by the trailers for The Matrix Resurrections, we can speculate what might be going on in Matrix 4 and 5.
We see that both Neo and Trinity are alive and kicking. However, Thomas Anderson (Neo) has no idea about the MAtrix, as his therapist is medicating him with blue pills. He even meets Trinity, but they can’t seem to remember each other, although they feel something is odd.
Well, they obviously learn about the Matrix again and get plugged back in, which means a new war is probably about to go down both inside and outside of the Matrix. Other reports play into this narrative about a new war brewing, but more on that later.
Matrix 5 Title
Unfortunately, Matrix 5 isn’t officially announced yet, so we don’t have a title – not even a working title, for that matter.
However, I strongly feel like the title of the fourth movie, The Matrix Resurrections, isn’t only talking about the reappearance of Neo and Trinity (who we thought were dead after The Matrix Revolutions), but also the resurrection of the franchise.
We’ll have to wait for Matrix 4 to hit the big screen to learn if and when the fifth movie is coming out, as well as what the title might be.
What Could Matrix 5 Be About?
Seeing that the entire team behind Matrix 4 (including the actors, producers, and other staff) is holding the plot extremely tight-lipped and refuse to share any details before the release, it’s hard to speculate on what Matrix 5 will be about. Still, some reports could point to where the story is heading.
Note that the reports are unconfirmed by anybody related to the franchise directly, so take them with a grain of salt.

The reports say that Matrix 4 will end with a cliff-hanger, setting up the events for Matrix 5, which will show a great new war between humans and machines.
In the final scenes of The Matrix Resurrections, Trinity and Neo will talk to The Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris’ character), telling him that a new battle is brewing before flying off. The Matrix 5 should kick off from there.
Matrix 5 Cast
The cast for Matrix 5 will probably be the same – or at least similar to the cast for Matrix 4. Of course, it’ll depend on how Resurrections will end and which characters will survive.
We know that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is portraying Morpheus instead of Laurence Fishburne. Fishburne revealed to the Collider that Wachowski hadn’t asked him to come back as Morpheus at all. It is uncertain why, but it’s probably because Fishburne is over 60 years old now, so the action scenes might’ve been too difficult for him.
If we’re to believe the reports about Neo, Trinity, and the Analyst being a part of the final scene of Matrix 4, it means that Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Neil Patrick Harris would all return in Matrix 5.
Jada Pinkett Smith is also returning to continue her role as Niobe from the original trilogy, while Lambert Wilson is back as the Merovingian. We’ve also seen Mindhunter’s star Jonathan Groff in the Matrix 4 trailer, so it’s probable he’ll return for Matrix 5 if his character survives.
There’s also Jessica Henwick as Bugs, Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson, and Cristina Ricci, whose character name hadn’t been disclosed just yet.
We know that Hugo Weaving won’t return as Agent Smith in The Matrix Resurrections, as the filming time collided with him starring in a theatrical version of The Visit. However, Lana Wachowski did reach out to Hugo, so who knows? Perhaps Agent Smith returns for the fifth installment. We can only hope, as we humans always do, am I right?
