Matt Shakman Stuns Fans with Surprise Visit to Oviedo Comic Book Store During ‘Fantastic Four’ Filming

Fantastic Four: First Steps is currently in production, with the latest update being that Marvel’s first family has arrived safely in Spain. The film will feature the Calatrava building in Oviedo, which previously stood in as the UN Headquarters in Captain America: Civil War.
As the cast and crew got ready for filming, director Matt Shakman had a big surprise in store for local fans.
Shakman stopped by Hangar Rebelde, a comic book store in Oviedo where scenes for the film are being filmed. He greeted the staff and bought a comic featuring Marvel’s first superhero family, drawn by Tom Scioli, because he liked its retro style.
The store owner, Jorge Etchegoyen, was excited, especially since the store’s display was themed around The Fantastic 4 and faced one of the filming locations. After chatting with him, Etchegoyen got a photo with Shakman, making it a memorable moment after years in the comic book business.

Filming preparations at the Calatrava Congress Palace were in full swing, with cranes, trucks, and wardrobes being set up for the shoot.
Stars like Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, playing Reed Richards and Sue Storm, were on set, joined by actors such as Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner, and John Malkovich. The building will briefly stand in as the UN headquarters for a few days as filming wraps up, with production set to finish in a week.
Details about the movie’s plot remain scarce, but First Steps will take place in an alternate retro-futuristic reality. The Fantastic Four will already be established superheroes, whose paths cross with Galactus due to his special connection to Franklin Richards. The movie will likely explore Galactus destroying their home reality, forcing the team to seek refuge on Earth-616.
