Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s Reunion Show Just Set an Unwanted Career Record on Rotten Tomatoes

Reuniting two actors with genuine, undeniable on-screen chemistry sounds like a foolproof formula on paper. When those actors happen to be Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, whose partnership on ‘True Detective’ remains one of television’s most celebrated pairings, expectations for whatever they did together next were always going to be sky-high.

That anticipation had been building for months as production on their new Apple TV comedy weathered its own share of behind-the-scenes turbulence, including a creative shakeup that saw original showrunner David West Read exit the project entirely before it reached screens. With those hurdles finally cleared, critics have now had their say.

‘Brothers’ has debuted to a rough reception on Rotten Tomatoes, currently sitting between 53 and 57 percent depending on the moment reviews were tallied, marking Matthew McConaughey’s first television series in history not to earn a Fresh score, according to ScreenRant’s tracking of the show’s Tomatometer.

‘Brothers’ casts McConaughey and Harrelson as fictionalized versions of themselves, longtime friends whose bond is upended when Matthew’s mother, played by Holland Taylor, accidentally reveals that the two men might actually be half-brothers. The eight-episode season also weaves in a subplot involving Matthew juggling a potential run for Governor of Texas, adding political chaos to the family drama at the show’s core.

Created by David West Read and Lee Eisenberg alongside McConaughey and Harrelson themselves, the series also stars Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, and Highdee Kuan, with Trent O’Donnell and Jason Winer directing.

Reactions have varied widely depending on the outlet. Empire’s Helen O’Hara gave the show 3 out of 5 stars, describing it as an “amiable, gently amusing caper based on a legend and propped up by two wildly overqualified leads,” while noting it’s “a little overstuffed” and “only ever needed to be a hangout show with the likeable stars.”

Financial Times critic Rebecca Nicholson was less convinced, giving the series 2 out of 5 and writing that while “there are points at which the leads’ undeniable chemistry sings on screen,” ‘Brothers’ struggles “to work out whether it is a surreal comedy or a sentimental drama.” USA Today’s Kelly Lawler was harsher still, describing the show as “one part celebrity gossip parody, one part buddy comedy and one part vanity project.”

Not every review has been negative. Tom’s Guide gave the series 3 out of 5 stars, calling it “a breezy, occasionally funny showcase” for the two leads, while acknowledging the plot feels “thin” and “padded out by predictable family drama.” That mixed-but-not-entirely-dismissive tone has echoed across several outlets, suggesting the show’s biggest strength, the genuine friendship between its two stars, remains intact even where the writing falls short.

‘Brothers’ had a genuinely turbulent production history before reaching audiences. Filming began in Austin, Texas, back in November 2024, but production was suspended and the cast was sent home in June 2025 following creative disagreements that led to West Read’s departure, with Eisenberg brought in to help steer the project as showrunner alongside him.

Given that troubled path, some of the tonal inconsistency critics have flagged may trace directly back to that mid-production shakeup, even as the finished product ultimately made it to screens roughly a year later than originally planned.

With ‘Brothers’ releasing weekly episodes following its September 23 premiere, scores could still shift as more reviews and eventual audience reactions roll in. For McConaughey and Harrelson, whose chemistry has never really been in question, the real test now is whether that connection alone is enough to carry viewers through eight episodes despite the show’s shakier critical reception.
