‘True Detective’ Stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey Close Out the Emmys With Bizarre Banter About Their Parents
Award shows famously run long, stretching past their scheduled end times almost every single year without fail. This year’s Emmys managed to pull off something genuinely unusual by comparison, and the ceremony’s final presenters ended up playing an unexpected role in fixing it.
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards found itself in the rare position of running short heading into its final moments, a problem no live awards broadcast typically has to solve. Producers turned to two seasoned showbiz veterans to help buy some time before handing out the night’s last trophy.
Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey took the stage to present the final award of the evening, Outstanding Comedy Series, and instead of rushing through the formalities, the two leaned into an extended bit of unscripted banter that quickly became one of the more talked-about moments of the broadcast.
McConaughey addressed the situation directly once they hit the stage, telling the audience, “They told us we need to spend more time up here, that the show is going short,” according to NBC News. Harrelson followed by joking about the awkwardness of the moment, quipping, “And the Emmy goes to — oh, are we supposed to stretch it out here a little bit?”
From there, the two leaned fully into their long-running friendship and a persistent rumor that has followed them for years: the idea that they might actually be secretly related. Referencing their upcoming show together called “Brothers,” which grew directly out of that internet theory, McConaughey told Harrelson, “You’ve had many talks with my mom before,” while Harrelson claimed McConaughey’s mother had once known his father.
The pair continued riffing on the possibility that their parents may have had a past relationship, with McConaughey eventually cracking, “That’s a pretty big lead for you to believe that your dad and my mom actually shagged,” before finally wrapping things up and presenting the award to ‘Widow’s Bay.’

Not everyone was thrilled with how long the bit ran. TVLine’s own recap described the segment as featuring “a zonked-out Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey riffing for what felt like hours” before the actual award was finally announced, while IndieWire’s coverage referred to the extended exchange as the two needing to “filibuster” through some “peculiar banter about their parents getting ‘horizontal.'”
Live-blog reactions during the broadcast captured a similar mix of amusement and exhaustion in real time, with one recap simply noting that “whatever Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are doing about their parents banging needs to stop.” Despite the mixed reception, the segment achieved exactly what producers needed, stretching the broadcast just enough that host Mariska Hargitay was able to close out the ceremony at 10:57 p.m., a rare instance of an Emmys telecast wrapping close to on schedule.

Harrelson and McConaughey’s chemistry isn’t exactly a new development, given their decades-long friendship dating back to their Emmy-winning work together on ‘True Detective.’ Whether audiences found the final stretch charming or exhausting, the duo’s willingness to fully commit to the bit gave the Emmys an unexpectedly memorable, if slightly chaotic, sendoff.
