Michael Gandolfini Talks Potential ‘Sopranos’ Prequel Series: “I think Tony’s probably set to rest now for good.”

Would you like to see more of Sopranos, one of the greatest series of all time? Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Gandolfini, recently shared his thoughts on the possibility of that being a reality.

In an interview with ET, the 25-year-old actor discussed whether he’d return to play a young Tony Soprano, the iconic role his father made famous on the HBO show. Michael, who already stepped into the character’s shoes for the 2021 film The Many Saints of Newark, said the decision isn’t his to make. He pointed to David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, as the one who holds the keys to that universe.

Michael explained that Chase is busy with other projects right now, none of which are tied to The Sopranos. “Look, it’s David’s universe,” he said. “It’s up to David, ultimately. I know that David’s working on some other things, not Sopranos-related, which would be exciting.”

While he’d enjoy teaming up with Chase again someday, Michael feels Tony Soprano’s story might be done. “I’d love to work with David again, but I think Tony’s probably set to rest now for good, but who knows, who knows — but my guess would be, that character [has] now closed the book on that,” he stated.

The actor also reflected on what playing Tony meant to him. He called it a huge honor to be part of the Sopranos world, even in a small way. “I am so honored that I got to be a part of that story. I got to be a small part of that huge [Sopranos] world and that is one of the greatest gifts that has ever really been a part of my career,” he said.

Still, he’s ready to move forward. “I’m grateful for it, and I’m ready to move on and be a new thing,” he added.

For Michael, stepping into his dad’s role was a big moment. James Gandolfini, who passed away in 2013, played Tony across six seasons, earning major awards like three Emmys. Michael’s turn as a younger Tony in The Many Saints of Newark gave fans a fresh look at the character’s early years.

But based on his comments, it seems both he and Chase are looking ahead to new challenges rather than revisiting New Jersey’s mob scene.

Right now, Michael is gearing up for a different role. He’s set to appear in Daredevil: Born Again, a Marvel series hitting Disney+ on March 4. Early buzz suggests he’ll play a character caught between good and evil, possibly tied to Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. It’s a shift from mob life to superhero drama, showing he’s eager to explore new paths.

Michael’s got a point about letting Tony rest. The Sopranos is a legend, and the prequel movie already gave us a solid peek into Tony’s past. Pushing for more might risk watering down something special.

Plus, it’s cool to see Michael carve his own space as an actor—he’s got talent and doesn’t need to lean on his dad’s shadow forever. What do you think? Should Tony Soprano stay retired, or would you watch another prequel? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!
