The Minecraft universe is getting bigger. Legendary and Warner Bros. have officially confirmed that a sequel to A Minecraft Movie is in the works and set to arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027.

The news came straight from the official Minecraft social media page, which revealed the film’s teaser poster with the caption, “Building terrain. See you in theaters July 23 2027.”

The announcement follows the huge success of the first Minecraft movie, which was released earlier this year and became a global hit.

The film earned nearly $958 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing movie of the year. In North America, it brought in about $424 million, while international ticket sales added more than $533 million.

Jared Hess, who directed the first film, will return to lead the sequel and will co-write the script with Chris Galletta. The project’s producers include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa — who also appeared in the original film.

Although A Minecraft Movie was a box office smash, critics were divided on its quality. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 48% approval rating based on 190 reviews. The site summarized the film as “a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to amusingly romp around in a story curiously constructed from conventional building blocks.”

The movie also sparked a viral trend across social media, especially on TikTok, where theatergoers turned screenings into full-blown events.

Fans, many of them teenage boys — began cheering and shouting famous lines from the film like “Chicken jockey!” and “Flint and steel!” Videos showing fans dancing, tossing popcorn, and even bringing live chickens to screenings quickly spread online.

While the trend brought attention to the movie, some theaters faced problems when the celebrations went too far, leading to disruptions and even a few incidents that required intervention.

Despite the mixed reviews and chaotic fan reactions, there’s no doubt that Minecraft struck a chord with audiences. With its huge box office numbers and massive online following, it’s no surprise Warner Bros. and Legendary are ready to build on that success.
