Illumination is bringing “Minions & Monsters” to the Annecy Animation Film Festival, where the movie will open the event on June 21. The information comes from festival announcements and official studio details shared ahead of the screening.

The film is part of the long-running “Minions” and “Despicable Me” universe. It continues the story after “Minions: The Rise of Gru” from 2022 and marks another chapter in a franchise that began in 2010.

Pierre Coffin directs the new film. He is also known as one of the creators of the original “Despicable Me” films. Illumination is producing the project, with Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan among the producers involved.

The story follows the Minions in a chaotic adventure that takes them through Hollywood. They rise to fame, lose everything, and end up accidentally releasing monsters into the world. After that, they try to fix the damage they caused and stop the chaos from spreading further.

The film mixes comedy with action and continues the franchise’s usual style of over-the-top humor and fast-paced storytelling. It also features a large voice cast, including Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Trey Parker, and Pierre Coffin himself, who has voiced the Minions since their first appearance.

The screenplay is written by Coffin and Brian Lynch, who previously worked on other animated hits like “Minions” and “The Secret Life of Pets.”

Before its Annecy screening, the film was first shown in parts during major industry events, including CinemaCon 2026. A trailer was also released earlier during the Super Bowl, giving audiences an early look at the new story.

The “Despicable Me” franchise has become one of the most successful animated series in film history, earning billions worldwide since its start. “Minions & Monsters” continues that legacy and brings the characters back to a global stage once again.

It makes sense that this film is opening Annecy because the franchise has strong roots in animation history now. The Minions are still very popular, and this kind of event helps build excitement before release. It will be interesting to see if the new story adds something fresh or stays close to the familiar formula. What do you think about this new Minions movie? Share your thoughts in the comments.
