Mr. Terrific Is Reportedly Getting His Own DC Series, and Fans Are Already Buzzing

Edi Gathegi’s scene-stealing turn as the genius vigilante in last year’s ‘Superman’ left a lasting impression on audiences, and it seems DC Studios noticed too. The character quickly became a fan favorite after his debut as a member of the Justice Gang, and speculation about his future in the DC Universe has only grown since. That kind of grassroots enthusiasm rarely goes unnoticed by a studio building out an entire cinematic universe from scratch.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have been steadily expanding the DCU slate since taking the reins, with projects like ‘Clayface,’ ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ and ‘Dynamic Duo’ already lined up for the coming years alongside other DCU films in development at the studio. Against that backdrop, a new report has surfaced pointing to yet another spinoff quietly taking shape behind the scenes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, in a piece that was largely centered on a post-mortem of ‘Supergirl,’ DC Studios has placed a standalone ‘Mr. Terrific’ series into active development. Buried near the end of that report was the detail that Allan Heinberg, known for his work on ‘The Sandman,’ is on board to write the pilot for the series, with Gathegi presumed to reprise his role from the film.

Heinberg’s attachment is being treated as a serious signal of intent rather than just an early rumor. He has an extensive television career with credits including ‘Gilmore Girls’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ and he is no stranger to the superhero genre either. He previously wrote comics of his own, including Marvel’s ‘Young Avengers,’ and served as screenwriter for 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ in addition to developing Netflix’s acclaimed ‘Sandman’ adaptation.

In the source material, Michael Holt’s version of Mister Terrific is a longtime leader within the Justice Society of America and was created by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake for 1997’s Spectre #54. He is known for his genius level intellect and his signature T Spheres, the floating devices he uses in combat and reconnaissance. Despite decades of comic book history, the character has never headlined his own solo television series before, which makes this reported move notably significant for longtime readers.

The timing lines up with a broader pattern from Gunn, who has built a reputation for elevating lesser known characters into fan favorites rather than always leaning on DC’s biggest names. The studio is also reportedly moving forward with a Jimmy Olsen led series referred to internally as centered on crime, with Skyler Gisondo’s character teaming up against some of DC’s most dangerous villains, suggesting this era of the DCU is leaning heavily into ensemble expansion beyond the core Justice League lineup.

No premiere window, casting beyond Gathegi, or additional creative details have been confirmed for the ‘Mr. Terrific’ project at this time. Gathegi is already set to return as the character in Man of Tomorrow, the direct Superman follow up premiering July 9, 2027, which could give DC Studios a natural launching pad to build further momentum for the character before any spinoff series arrives. With Heinberg’s pedigree now attached, the pressure is on to deliver something worthy of the buzz Gathegi generated in his first outing.
