Ms. Marvel Star Iman Vellani Talks About The Titular Character’s Modified Powers
Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon welcome its newest hero to its roster. Ms. Marvel, portrayed by Iman Vellani will debut in the Disney+ series of the same name, which is set to premiere on June 8. Ms. Marvel will be introduced in her own series before she joins Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau in The Marvels, the upcoming MCU movie which is set to be released in July 2023.
Ever since the first trailer for the series was released, Marvel fans who are introduced to the source material have criticized the modified powers of the titular hero. In the comic books, Ms. Marvel has the ability to shapeshift and extend her limbs, similar to Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards or DC’s Elongated Man. But in the series, the character’s powers were changed to creating cosmic constructs thanks to the special bracelet, which is more similar to DC’s Green Lantern, or Purple Lantern, if you like that better.
It’s known that adaptations do not always need to follow the source material, but this is one heavy change. Still, Iman Vellani defends it and explains that it’s not about the powers, it’s about Kamala Khan’s journey.
“I’m very possessive [of Kamala]. I think we stay true to what the comics brought. The themes have always been about identity and about marrying the 50 million things that make Kamala. For all I care, she could shoot sausages out of her fingers, as long as she still goes on that self-discovery journey.” — Iman Vellani for SFX Magazine (via The Direct)
Ms. Marvel will have a special theatrical release in Pakistan. The series will premiere on Disney+ on June 8, 2022.
