Netflix ‘North of North’ Season 1 Recap: Where Siaja’s Story Stands Before the Return to Ice Cove

‘North of North’ is gearing up for its second season return to Netflix this November after more than a year away. The new run premieres on Thursday, November 5. That makes this a good moment for a ‘North of North’ recap of where the first season left its characters.

The series follows an Inuk woman named Siaja in the Arctic town of Ice Cove as she tries to reinvent herself after a spontaneous exit from her marriage to the town’s golden boy. The comedy’s eight episode first season was met with acclaim and Netflix soon renewed it. Here is a clear look at how the story built toward its finale.

Siaja’s Breakup and the Ice Cove Fallout

Siaja is a young woman who feels stuck in a traditional marriage, with a six year old daughter and a husband named Ting who has little interest in her wish to find a job. She had married her high school sweetheart at twenty one, and Ting responded to her request by deciding the couple should have a second child.

The breaking point comes when Siaja falls into the sea while hunting seals and Ting barely notices, calling her an embarrassment before he leaves. She responds by ending the marriage in public and flipping off the whole town while drunk. It is a messy and very human starting point for a comedy built on second chances.

That same night she kisses a man she has just met, a research scientist, and soon learns from her mother that he is her father. The awkward twist sets up the family tension that drives much of the season.

North of North Ending Explained Through Neevee’s Secret

The finale is titled ‘Bad Influences’ and closes out the eight episode run. In it, Siaja prepares a presentation for a research team deciding between Ice Cove and the larger town of Tuktuktalik. Her focus is shaken by trouble at home.

Neevee finally admits that she had another baby before Siaja, one who was taken from her by the child’s father. This explains her lifelong fear of losing Siaja and why she kept the truth from Alistair. Siaja forgives her mother and learns she has a sister.

Siaja then tosses the planned pitch and speaks about how Inuit have been doing research on their land for centuries. Tuktuktalik wins the main research center thanks to better infrastructure and internet, but the team is so impressed that it places a satellite office in Ice Cove. The result is a modest victory that feels earned rather than tidy.

Siaja and Kuuk’s Love Story Stays Unresolved

Siaja began to fall for Kuuk during the season, only for his girlfriend to resurface moments after Siaja found the courage to kiss him at the local bar. By the end she had not gone back to Ting, and Kuuk was still with Alexis, who had unexpectedly turned up in town.

The finale complicates things further because Kuuk’s girlfriend decides to stay in Ice Cove and help at the center where Siaja works. Ting may have worked on himself, but he remains a work in progress. Romance and career now overlap in a way that keeps the central relationship tense.

Siaja also keeps seeing Nuliajuk, the sea goddess, ever since her near death experience, which adds a spiritual thread to the closing moments. The finale is not wholly open ended, yet it leaves enough room for another season.

The Second Season Return and What Fans Can Expect

The second season arrived first on CBC Gem on September 8, with Netflix following this fall. The first season also swept nine awards at the Canadian Screen Awards, which helped build momentum for its comeback.

The series was co-created by Nunavut filmmakers Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril and was filmed in Iqaluit. Speaking to Nunatsiaq News, actor Vinnie Karetak summed up its appeal by calling it “Inuit humour and a universal drama.”

The debut season also highlighted Siaja’s complicated bond with her mother, which looks like fertile ground for what comes next. With a half sister to find, a rival in love and a research office to run, Siaja has plenty ahead of her. Should she chase answers about her sister before she sorts out where she stands with Kuuk, and where do you want ‘North of North’ to take her next?
