Netflix Releases ‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Trailer as Gaiman’s Scandal Looms Over Series

The second and final season of Netflix’s The Sandman is almost here, with its first trailer now out. The dark fantasy series will wrap up in two parts: Volume 1 drops on July 3, 2025, and Volume 2 arrives on July 24, 2025.

A special bonus episode will follow on July 31, 2025, marking the end of the show.

Showrunner Allan Heinberg confirmed the series was always meant to focus on Dream’s story, with enough material from the comics for just one more season. “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” Heinberg said.

He also thanked Netflix, adding, “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation.”

Tom Sturridge returns as Dream, joined by new faces. In May 2024, Adrian Lester, Esmé Creed-Miles, and Barry Sloane were cast as Destiny, Delirium, and Destruction. More actors, including Ruairi O’Connor, Freddie Fox, Clive Russell, Ann Skelly, Jack Gleeson, and Steve Coogan, joined in July 2024, playing characters like Loki, Odin, Thor, and Puck.

Production began in June 2023 at Shepperton Studios but paused in July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Neil Gaiman, the comic’s creator and a key figure in the series, announced on social media that filming restarted in November 2023. It wrapped in August 2024.

Gaiman is facing controversy following allegations of sexual misconduct by multiple women, first reported in early 2025 by Tortoise Media and later by New York Magazine. Gaiman denied the claims in a blog post, stating, “I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.

The messages I exchanged with the women… read now as they did then — of two people enjoying entirely consensual sexual relationships.” The accusations have impacted other projects, with Dark Horse Comics halting Gaiman’s book adaptations and Disney pausing its The Graveyard Book film.

The first season, released in August 2022, was a success, earning strong reviews and holding a spot in Netflix’s global top 10 for seven weeks. It also performed well in U.S. streaming rankings. With Season 2, fans will soon revisit the Dreaming for the final time.

The Sandman’s final season looks like a fitting end, staying true to the comics while adding fresh talent. The split release and bonus episode are smart ways to keep fans engaged, but Gaiman’s controversy casts a shadow over the show’s return.

It’s tough to separate art from artist, and I wonder how this will affect the series’ reception. What do you think about The Sandman’s last season or the surrounding issues? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
