Dexter Morgan has spent most of his life worrying about killers, the police, and the secrets that could expose him. In Season 2 of ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ however, Michael C. Hall’s character may have to deal with something much harder to escape: getting older.

A new photo from the upcoming season shows Dexter working out at a gym, but the image could mean more than simply showing that he is staying in shape. The second season is expected to put much more focus on Dexter’s age and the physical changes that come with it. Showrunner Clyde Phillips has talked about this new side of the character, and it sounds like Dexter will have to adjust to a body that is no longer as reliable as it once was.

That does not mean Dexter is suddenly becoming weak. Far from it. He is still one of the smartest and most dangerous people in the room. The difference is that he can no longer depend on his physical abilities in the same way. Phillips has explained that Dexter now needs reading glasses to see his phone, which is a funny but important reminder that even a character like Dexter cannot stop time.

The new season could use that idea to change the way Dexter handles danger. Instead of simply overpowering someone, he may have to think several steps ahead. His mind is still sharp, but his body is beginning to show its age. The gym scene could be a small example of Dexter trying to keep himself ready while knowing that staying fit does not solve every problem.

There are plenty of other problems waiting for him in New York, too. Season 2 takes place three years after the events of the first season and introduces two very different killers. Brian Cox joins the series as Don Framt, a veteran murderer known as the New York Ripper. Dan Stevens also joins the story as Lucas Stark, a younger killer called the Five Borough Killer.

Having two major threats in the same city could make things much more complicated for Dexter. He is used to hunting people who believe they are smarter than everyone else, but these killers bring very different challenges. Dexter will have to decide when to act, who to target, and how much danger he is willing to put himself in.

His relationship with Harrison could make everything even harder. The three-year time jump allows Harrison, played by Jack Alcott, to turn 21. That means he can now join the NYPD, putting him much closer to the kind of investigation that Dexter has spent years trying to avoid. His son could end up working for the same police department that might eventually uncover Dexter’s secrets.

That setup gives Season 2 a very personal problem for Dexter. He may be able to hide his double life from strangers, but hiding it from his own son could become much harder. Harrison’s new career also means Dexter has to be more careful about what he does and where he does it.

Uma Thurman returns as Charley, while Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa, Desmond Harrington, and James Remar are also part of the returning cast. Bokeem Woodbine and Nona Parker Johnson join as new series regulars, adding even more characters to Dexter’s growing New York story.

‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on October 30, putting its return right around Halloween and close to the franchise’s 20th anniversary. Episodes are expected to arrive weekly through December, giving fans plenty of time to follow Dexter’s latest problems.

The gym photo may not reveal much about the story on its own, but it fits what Phillips has teased about the new season. Dexter still has the instincts and intelligence that made him such a dangerous killer. Now he has to figure out how to keep those skills working while his body starts reminding him that he is not getting any younger. With two killers after him and Harrison moving closer to the NYPD, getting older may turn out to be Dexter’s biggest challenge yet.
