New ‘Wheel of Time’ Open-World RPG Set to Expand Epic Fantasy Universe

Are There Dragons In The Wheel Of Time?

A massive new video game based on Robert Jordan’s sprawling ‘Wheel of Time’ book series is coming. I’m thrilled to share that iwot Studios, the company behind the franchise’s adaptations, has kicked off development on a AAA open-world RPG through its brand-new gaming division, iwot games. This isn’t just a side project—it’s a big step to bring the rich, intricate world of ‘Wheel of Time’ to life for gamers on PC and consoles.

The game is being built from the ground up in Montreal, a hotspot for game development. Leading the charge is Craig Alexander, a veteran who’s worked on big titles like ‘The Lord of the Rings Online’ and ‘Dungeons & Dragons Online’ during his time at Warner Bros. Games.

He’s also got experience with mobile games tied to ‘Game of Thrones’ and DC superheroes. Alexander’s team is aiming for a three-year development timeline, so we’re looking at a release around 2028. The goal? Create a game that lets players roam the whole ‘Wheel of Time’ universe, from the iconic cities of Tar Valon and Caemlyn to the ancient histories tucked into the books’ lore.

What makes this project stand out is its scope. The game won’t be tied to just one part of the story or a single era. Instead, it’ll weave together the full tapestry of Jordan’s world, including backstories and settings that span thousands of years. With over 2,700 named characters in the 14-book series, there’s no shortage of stories to explore. I can already imagine wandering through the Aiel Waste or battling Shadowspawn in the Blight.

This RPG is part of iwot Studios’ bigger plan to expand ‘Wheel of Time’ across different media. The company, which grabbed the rights to the books for film, TV, comics and games back in 2004, is already producing the hit ‘Wheel of Time’ TV series on Amazon Prime Video, now in its third season. Starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, the show follows a group of young heroes caught in a battle against the Dark One. The series has built a strong following, and the game aims to carry that energy forward.

According to iwot Studios CEO Rick Selvage in a chat with Variety, the game, TV show, and films will share a connected approach, making sure the world feels consistent whether you’re watching, playing, or reading.

Montreal’s vibrant game dev scene is a perfect fit for this project. Alexander says the city’s creative energy and talent pool are key to tackling the challenge of adapting such a massive story. For fans like me, the idea of stepping into Jordan’s world as a character—maybe even channeling the One Power—is beyond exciting. This game could redefine how we experience epic fantasy in gaming.
