Notable Guardian of the Galaxy Confirms He Won’t Return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a huge Marvel event with many big names returning from across the multiverse. The cast includes stars like Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Pedro Pascal, and even Robert Downey Jr. But this time, Downey Jr. isn’t playing Iron Man, he’s stepping into the villain role as Doctor Doom.

The movie also brings back familiar faces from the old X-Men films, like Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn.

The big livestream event that revealed most of the cast was long, and Marvel boss Kevin Feige along with some insiders hinted there are still more surprises to be announced.

However, not every fan favorite is coming back. Sean Gunn, known for playing Kraglin Obfonteri in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, has confirmed that he won’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Sean’s character showed up in six Marvel projects, including all three Guardians films, the Holiday Special, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Avengers: Endgame.

The main reason he’s missing this time is likely that Sean Gunn has taken on a new role in the DC Universe. He’s now playing Maxwell Lord, a well-known villain connected to Justice League and Wonder Woman in DC Comics. He is set to appear in the upcoming Superman movie and the second season of the TV show Peacemaker, both arriving soon.

Given this new role and his move to DC, it makes sense that Sean Gunn won’t be returning to Marvel anytime soon. While many fans are excited to see him as a villain, not everyone has been happy. Some fans accused James Gunn, who is Sean’s brother and head of DC Studios, of nepotism for casting him in so many projects.

Even Zachary Levi, who played Shazam in the DCEU, commented on this topic about a year and a half ago. When asked about actors like Jason Momoa and Sean Gunn sticking around in the newly formed DCU, Levi seemed surprised and said he didn’t even know Sean had any roles in DCEU at the time.

Levi joked, “When you’re the brother of the guy who runs DC, I guess you get to play who you want.”

No matter what people say, Sean Gunn is clearly moving forward with his DC career. For Marvel fans, this means they won’t see Kraglin in Avengers: Doomsday.
