Time flies. It’s been 20 years since the Wizarding World franchise kicked off on the big screen with Chris Columbus’ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Back then, 10-year old Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint starred in the movie that kicked off their careers. The famous trio reappeared in seven sequels, and the Harry Potter film series concluded in 2011 with David Yates’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.
Now, thanks to HBOMax, the cast is having a reunion on the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter film series. The main trio and several other actors from the Harry Potter movies will join together in this reunion special that will be released on HBOMax on new Year’s Day. Although the Harry Potter film series concluded in 2011, the fans kept enjoying both movies and the original J.K. Rowling’s books till this day. In 2016, the spin-off franchise Fantastic Beats kicked off with Eddie Redmayne playing Newt Scamander. The sequel The Crimes of Grindelwald was released in 2018, and next April we are getting a threequel Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Redmaybe is reprising the role of Newt in the threequel, and Jude Law is also reprising the role of Albus Dumbledore, while Mads Mikkelsen is replacing John Depp as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Author and screenwriter J.K. Rowling revealed that she mapped out a five-movie Fantastic Beasts series, but considering that The Crimes of Grindelwald was the lowest-grossing movie of the Wizarding World franchise, it’s safe to say that the future of the franchise is depending on this next movie.
Harry Potter fans can also look forward to Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world video game that is set to be released next year for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will be released on HBOMax on New Year’s Day.
