‘One Piece’: Does Sabo’s Full Name Include the Letter ‘D.’?
In terms of One Piece secondary characters, everyone knows how important Sabo is for the series. This quirky character has a rich history and is closely connected to both Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace, and we know how important they are. Currently known as “Flame Emperor” Sabo, the character has become even more important in recent manga chapters, as his role has suddenly increased to that of one of the major threats to the World Government. And while he has been known as Sabo for most of his life, the young man’s reputation earned him a new nickname recently, but is that all? Does Sabo have a full name, and could his full name actually contain the initial ‘D.’? We are going to analyze that in this article for you.
At this moment, Sabo’s full name is only Sabo. The title “Flame Emperor” is simply an epithet he received due to his Devil Fruit abilities. Whether Sabo could be Sabo D. [something] or [Something] D. Sabo is currently unknown, as Oda has not hinted at Sabo having the Will of D. in his name. As far as it is known, the initial is inherited, and Sabo’s parents did not have that initial, so it is unlikely unless Oda changes something; the Will of D. is still a big enigma in One Piece, and there is room for changes, but since one-word names in the series are common, Sabo’s status remains as it is.
The rest of the article will answer some relevant questions surrounding the character of Sabo and his current story in One Piece. You will find out everything you want to and need to know about the character, as we intend to answer some burning and interesting questions raised recently in the series. If you don’t know the whole story of One Piece, we have to warn you that there will be spoilers in the following paragraphs.
The Will of D. is an enigma, and while Sabo doesn’t seem to be a likely person with the initial, this might change
And while Sabo had been a well-known character since his debut in Chapter 583 of the One Piece manga, he had simply been known as Sabo for almost 500 chapters. This changed in Chapter 1054 of the manga, which was released on July 25, 2022, titled “Flame Emperor.” In this chapter, Sabo received a new name and has, since then, been known as “Flame Emperor” Sabo.
Now, Sabo is an old character, but his role has steadily increased since he joined Dragon’s Revolutionary Army and received Ace’s former Devil Fruit. The latter earned Sabo the new epithet, but that is a different topic and one we have already talked about in the series. And while this article is going to focus on Sabo’s name as well, we’re going to discuss a different aspect here – namely, could Sabo have the Will of D., the famous ‘D.’ initial, in his name?
The Will of D. refers to a series of characters with the initial letter D. in their names, usually between their last and first names. At this moment, not much is known about this initial, but historically, many powerful and important characters in the series have had or still have the Will of D., including Luffy, Roger, Ace, Garp, and Blackbeard, among others. They are considered to be the “natural enemies of God” by the World Nobles. Recently, it has been revealed that Queen Lili of Arabasta is somehow connected to the initial, but it remains an enigma still.
So, most characters who have the initial have immediately been identified as holders of the initial. Sabo has not. And while the Will of D. is still a big mystery, it has been implied that it is somehow inherited (just like Garp’s son, Dragon, and grandson, Luffy, hold the initial, as did Ace, who was Roger’s son), but the exact mechanism is still unknown.
In that aspect, in Sabo’s case, we can state that he was born in the kingdom of Goa into a noble family to parents who wanted him to marry a girl from the royal family to raise their own status, not caring about his opinion on the matter. Realizing this, Sabo ran away when he was around five years old, being presumed dead by his parents. He later met Ace, with whom he began stealing in the city and in the Gray Terminal, becoming the best of friends.
His parents, thus, did not have the initial D. in their names, so Sabo could not have inherited it from them. Their last names are unknown, so we don’t really know Sabo’s full name, but one-word names in One Piece are not uncommon (Shanks, for example, Imu, etc.), so it could be that he will simply remain Sabo forever. Now, at this moment, we don’t really know what Oda has in store for Sabo, but he is certainly going to play a bigger role in the series in the future. Does that mean that he will get the D. in his name? We don’t know.
The main issue here is that we do not know how the initial is gained. There is a possibility that Sabo might get it from Dragon, who has it, but that would completely change the current paradigm related to the Will of D., and Oda would have to explain why some characters were born with it, as well as how some other characters received it.
Sabo getting the Will of D. doesn’t seem likely at this point, but it is not completely impossible. It would require a larger plot intervention and many explanations, but it is not completely impossible. This means that we will have to wait and see how the situation evolves to find out.
