One Piece is an anime with its fair share of strong characters. While its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is certainly among them, some characters are even more powerful than the cheerful and quirky protagonist of the manga. But, this generally didn’t stop Luffy from fighting them and in this article, we are going to analyze one One Piece fight involving Luffy and tell you just what happened. The fight we are talking about is Luffy’s fight against Magellan, one of the few guys who almost managed to kill the Straw Hat in the series. Luckily, Luffy outsmarted Magellan and in this article, we are going to tell you what actually happened.
When did Luffy and Magellan fight?
Before we start off with the main topic, allow us just to say that Luffy and Magellan actually fought twice in the series. The first fight happened on Level 4 of Impel Down and this is when Magellan poisoned and almost killed Luffy; we’ve written about Luffy’s miraculous survival in an earlier article. This took place in Episodes 435-437 of the anime and Chapters 533-536 of the manga.
Their second fight took place on Level 1 of Impel Down, and this is the fight we are going to tell you about. Luffy had some help from Mr. 3 and the prisoners, and that was enough to outwit Magellan. This battle took place in Episodes 448-452 of the anime, i.e., Chapters 545-549 of the manga.
Luffy did not defeat Magellan in battle, but he did outsmart him
After leaving Luffy to die and returning to the facility, he discovers that some riots have broken out in the meantime. Magellan traps the escapees led by Buggy and Galdino (Mr. 3) on the second level and orders Hannyabal to resist and try to stop the revolt led by Luffy, Crocodile, Jinbe, and Emporio Ivankov on the fourth until he arrives. The director is informed that Blackbeard entered the prison without authorization by defeating the guards at the entrance, so he orders Shiryu to be released so that he can deal with the new threat.
However, having reached the fourth level, Magellan meets Teach and his crew. So he hurls his poison at them and walks away, leaving them in agony. Once at the entrance to the stairs, he finds Sady-chan tied to the ceiling and Hannyabal lifeless. In fact, Luffy’s group managed to defeat the guards and continue their ascent, forcing the director to start chasing them.
When the group of escapees reaches the stairs leading to the second level, Ivankov stays behind to confront the director. However, Magellan defeats him without too much difficulty and reaches the second level, where Inazuma awaits him. However, the second revolutionary also ends up the same way and Magellan thus reaches the higher level.
There, he contacts the Navy ships and orders them to set sail in order to prevent any escape from the prison. He then attacks all the inmates he encounters with his poison until Galdino intervenes and uses the wax to stop the director’s attack. Seeing that the wax resists the poison, Luffy gets his hands and feet covered and begins to attack Magellan since he can now hit him without getting poisoned.
Tired of the blows he has suffered, Magellan decides to use his most powerful poison, capable of melting even wax, forcing all the inmates to flee again. Having arrived at the entrance to the prison, Galdino creates a wall of wax, and Luffy, after activating Gear Third, throws it toward the director, slowing down his advance. However, once the wax wall has also melted, Magellan reaches the exit. Ivankov, however, manages to generate a huge shock wave that allows both him and all the escapees, clinging to his head enlarged by his powers, to reach the sea, where some whale sharks called by Jinbe make him bounce until he reaches the deck of the ship commandeered by Crocodile, Daz Bones and Buggy. The escapees thus reach the Gates of Justice, which incredibly begin to open.
Not understanding who inside the large prison gave that order, Magellan runs into the control room and discovers that Bentham has disguised himself as him to deceive the guards. Furious with anger, he prepares to fight the criminal. Magellan is later seriously injured by the second group of escapees from the sixth level and is on the brink of death. However, he manages to communicate to the World Government what happened, taking full responsibility for it.
