One Piece: What Are the SMILE Fruits & How Many Are There?

Every fan of One Piece knows what a Devil Fruit is, and most fans know that they are divided into Paramecia-, Logia-, and Zoan-type Devil Fruits, based on how they affect the user. But there are also SMILE Fruits. WHAT Fruits? Yes, SMILE Fruits! SMILE Fruits are a group of artificial Devil Fruits, and in this article, we will tell you what they are and how many there are.

SMILEs or SMILE Fruits are actually artificial Zoan-type Devil Fruits that were created using SAD. Donquixote Doflamingo and Caesar Clown created these fruits, but they were later taken and utilized by the Beasts Pirates, which makes sense based on their name. So far, the series has introduced us to a total of 46 SMILE Fruits.

In the rest of this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about the SMILE Devil Fruits. We will tell you a bit about then and, then, how many there are and what they are. Be aware that there might be some spoilers in this article, so be careful how you approach our text if you’re not fully up-to-date with the happenings in One Piece.

SMILEs are artificial Devil Fruits that turn people into human-beast hybrids

The SMILEs sold by Doflamingo were obtained from SAD, a substance that only Caesar Clown can synthesize by mixing the hereditary genetic factors of various animals. It was produced at Punk Hazard and transported to Dressrosa on tankers; it was used in the SMILE factory to create artificial devil fruits. When the latter were ingested, inherited genetic factors altered the consumer’s body to give it the characteristics of a specific animal. Kaido bought over five hundred of them, thus forming a fearsome army at his service.

Due to the great skill of the Tontatta dwarves in cultivating all types of plants and their extreme naivety, they produced SMILES convinced that they were used to cure their princess Mansherry. Despite their abilities, only one in ten fruits became functioning devil fruit, while in defective ones, the ability to transmit unwanted effects remained even if bitten once.

All the fruits that became SMILE were red apples, leaving their flavor unchanged, so they did not have the bad taste of common devil fruits. Owners of these fruits, such as the Gifters of the Pirates of a Hundred Beasts, can only partially transform into a specific animal and cannot choose which body part to transform.

Furthermore, those who gain the sentient head of an animal on their body are no longer able to reverse the transformation. They carry the weaknesses common to Devil Fruits, and their owners can suffer the effects of the Kibi Kibi Devil Fruit; those who eat the defective fruits only get side effects and lose the ability to show expressions other than a smile. No drug can cure these effects. Since hereditary genetic factors can only be extracted from living animals, creating Smiles that allow transformation into mythological or extinct animals is impossible.
