‘One Tree Hill’ Is Finally Back on Netflix and the Timing Could Not Be More Perfect

Few teen dramas have left a mark on pop culture quite the way ‘One Tree Hill’ did. Created by Mark Schwahn and premiering on The WB back in 2003, the show spent nine seasons turning a small fictional North Carolina town into one of the most emotionally rich settings in television history. Set in Tree Hill, the story initially revolves around half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott, whose rivalry spanned the basketball court and their deeply complicated personal lives. Alongside them, characters like Brooke Davis, Peyton Sawyer, and Haley James Scott gave the series a beating, emotionally layered heart that resonated far beyond its original CW audience.

The show ran until 2012, and despite never quite getting the streaming afterlife it deserved, it maintained a fiercely devoted fanbase for over a decade after its finale. Netflix had been the series’ long-term streaming home throughout much of the 2010s, but the title ultimately left the platform in October 2017. For fans who grew up with Lucas and Peyton, that departure stung. Now, that wait is finally over.

The complete series, all nine seasons of ‘One Tree Hill’, has launched on Netflix in select international regions. This move allows a new generation to catch up on the Scott brothers’ rivalry before the next chapter begins, with the streamer clearly positioning the classic series as essential viewing ahead of something much bigger on the horizon.

Where Are the Stars of ‘One Tree Hill’ Today?

That something bigger is a full sequel series currently in development at Netflix. Original stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton are set to executive produce and reprise their roles of Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer, respectively, in the sequel series from writer and executive producer Becky Hartman Edwards and Warner Bros. TV. Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles also executive produce through their Chaos Machine banner, with Danneel in talks to return as Rachel Scott. Notably, the original series creator has no involvement, a detail the returning stars have been vocal about embracing.

Hilarie Burton Morgan opened up to People magazine about the upcoming Netflix show, saying that “being able to work with a team of women and look at these stories and these characters through a female lens is something that is so vital” to her at this stage in her career. She and Bush also released a joint statement celebrating the news, writing that if there is “an opportunity to team with brilliant creatives and build a space where all our friends can show off their talents, own our history, reclaim our turf, and honor our fans,” they are fully on board.

The sequel is said to take place 20 years later, following best friends Brooke and Peyton who are now parents to teens and facing challenges not unlike those they tackled in the original series, including love, insecurities, and grief. The show returning to Netflix in the lead-up to that sequel is clearly a calculated and smart move, giving both longtime fans and first-time viewers a chance to fall in love with Tree Hill all over again before the next chapter begins.

With the original series now streaming and a sequel still building momentum, the ‘One Tree Hill’ universe feels more alive than it has in years. Whether you watched it live on The CW or are discovering it for the first time, now is the ideal moment to dive in. Are you ready to revisit Tree Hill from the beginning, or are you holding out hope that Chad Michael Murray will eventually find his way back to Lucas Scott?
