Pedro Pascal Just Got a Fresh New Look in Tony Gilroy’s Long-Awaited ‘Behemoth!’, and It’s Full of Mystery

Filmmakers who spend years away from features tend to generate a very specific kind of anticipation when they finally return, especially when the wait involves building one of television’s most acclaimed recent projects in the meantime. Every new glimpse becomes a small event in itself, offering clues about what that creative energy has produced.

That anticipation is now paying off in a big way, with fresh footage giving fans another look at just how personal this particular comeback promises to be.

A new look at Pedro Pascal in Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!’ has been released, showing the actor dressed in a formal tuxedo, walking down a tree-lined street. The film is set to arrive in theaters on December 4, marking director Tony Gilroy’s first feature film since 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy,” following his years spent creating the acclaimed Disney+ series “Andor.”

Pascal stars as Alex Serian, a gifted cellist who returns home to Los Angeles after two decades on the road, with music serving as what the official synopsis describes as “the constant, all-consuming river of his life” that begins carrying him toward “an adventure that will change him forever.” According to Deadline, Pascal performs a significant amount of his own cello work throughout the film, a detail the trailer leans into heavily as it opens on him mid-performance in a wood-paneled parlor before cutting through scenes of reunions, arguments, and what appears to be a deeply fractured family surrounding him.

Gilroy has described “Behemoth!” as something of a long-held ambition, explaining his fascination with the world of Hollywood film scoring in an interview shared by Rolling Stone. Reflecting on his time working alongside composers Nicholas Britell on “Andor” and Michael Giacchino on “Rogue One,” Gilroy said watching a room of 30, 60, or 90 individual musicians transform into “a single, collective, communal, blended voice” left him fascinated, adding, “I can’t believe no one’s made a movie about this before.”

That fascination translated into an unusually ambitious approach to the film’s score itself, with Gilroy enlisting nine separate composers, including Michael Giacchino, Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, and Henry Jackman, to contribute music throughout the project. According to World of Reel, the film has been described in early reactions as a talky, character-driven drama centered on Alex, a gifted but emotionally distant cellist whose detached life is upended by the death of his longtime partner, structured as more of a portrait of narcissism, aging, and artistic emptiness than a traditional plot-driven story.

The film’s stacked ensemble cast includes Olivia Wilde as an ex-partner from the life Alex once left behind, Eva Victor as a new love interest, and Will Arnett stepping into the role of Alex’s brother after David Harbour departed the project due to personal mental health reasons, according to World of Reel. Rounding out the cast are Hank Azaria, Matthew Lillard, JoBeth Williams, Alexa Swinton, Kaya Ralls, Margarita Levieva, and Erik Griffin.

With Searchlight Pictures positioning the film for a prime early-December release date squarely within awards season contention, and given the studio’s track record steering films like “Poor Things” and “Nomadland” through that same corridor, “Behemoth!” looks poised to be one of the more closely watched prestige dramas of the season.
