‘Percy Jackson’ Season 3 Is Reportedly Giving Annabeth A Storyline The Books Never Told
Comic Con season always brings a flood of reveals, but few franchises manage to turn a simple panel discussion into a genuine talking point among longtime readers. That has been the case this week for ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians,’ the Disney+ adaptation of Rick Riordan’s beloved book series.
The show has spent two seasons carefully balancing devotion to the source material with the demands of television, and Season 3 appears ready to test that balance more than ever. Season 3 will adapt ‘The Titan’s Curse’ for the first time, marking new territory since the earlier Logan Lerman film adaptations never made it past the second book.
According to a post from Nexus Point News shared during San Diego Comic Con, executive producer Dan Shotz revealed that Annabeth’s role has been significantly expanded for Season 3 compared to her presence in the book. During the panel on July 23, Shotz confirmed the show is not diverging from Annabeth’s fate in the third novel, which sees her separated from Percy and Grover for much of the story. Shotz explained that Annabeth is separated from the group in this story and is not actually featured very much in the book itself.
Despite that separation, the creative team apparently saw an opportunity rather than a limitation. Shotz told the crowd that the production plans to open up the world and explore where Annabeth is, giving audiences a new look into that part of the story, adding that it has been nice to expand on that thread during the panel covered by Deadline.
The stakes attached to that expansion are not small. The season picks up after a time jump, with Percy receiving a distress call from Grover about two new half blood siblings, Nico and Bianca di Angelo, discovered at a military academy called Westover Hall, only for the rescue mission to spiral into Annabeth’s kidnapping. That single plot turn now sits at the emotional center of the season, since her absence forces the rest of the group to function without their usual anchor.
Co star Walker Scobell touched on how that shift reshapes the dynamic between Percy and Thalia. Scobell noted that both characters are, as far as they know, the only children of the Great Prophecy, which raises the question of who is destined to save or destroy Olympus, and that the tension is complicated by the fact that Annabeth, the one person who connects them, has been taken away. With Annabeth traditionally serving as the group’s voice of reason, her absence pushes Percy into unfamiliar territory as a leader.
The expanded cast further signals how much ground this season intends to cover. New additions include Dafne Keen as Artemis, Saara Chaudry as Zoë Nightshade, Kate McKinnon as Aphrodite, Ming-Na Wen as Hera, Hubert Smielecki as Apollo, Jesse L. Martin as Annabeth’s father Frederick Chase, and Holt McCallany as the Titan Atlas. Season 3 is confirmed to premiere on Disney+ on November 20.
