It’s been more than a decade since Puss in Boots starred in his own spin-off movie. Played by Antonio Banderas, the character debuted in 2004’s Shrek 2, and Banderas reprised the role in Shrek the Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010. In 2011, Puss in Boots got his own spin-off film, which grossed $555 million against the reported budget of $130 million. The movie received a positive response from the critics and fans of the Shrek franchise, and it was nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Animated Feature (lost to Gore Verbinski’s Rango).

In a decade after the first spin-off movie’s release, there have been so many talks about the sequel. In 2014, the sequel, titled Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves, was set to be released in 2018, but it was removed from the schedule in January 2015. The same month, a spin-off series, The Adventures of Puss in Boots, in which the character was voiced by Eric Bauza, debuted on Netflix and it concluded in 2018 after six seasons. Following the conclusion of the series, DreamWorks revived the development of the feature sequel. This time with a new title — Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures recently revealed the official trailer:

Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek reprise the roles of Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws from the previous movie, respectively. This time, the focus of the story will be on Puss’ nine lives. Realizing that he already lived out eight of them, he must decide what he wants to do with his last life while going into a new adventure with his female counterpart and love interest, Kitty.

“This fall, everyone’s favorite leche-loving, swashbuckling, fear-defying feline returns. For the first time in more than a decade, DreamWorks Animation presents a new adventure in the Shrek universe as daring outlaw Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet. Academy Award® nominee Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the notorious PiB as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws (Oscar® nominee Salma Hayek). In their quest, Puss and Kitty will be aided—against their better judgment—by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén, What We Do in the Shadows). Together, our trio of heroes will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Oscar® nominee Florence Pugh, Black Widow) and the Three Bears Crime Family, “Big” Jack Horner (Emmy winner John Mulaney, Big Mouth) and terrifying bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura, Narcos).” — Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, official synopsis

Directed by Joel Crawford, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be released on September 23, 2022.
