Rebecca Romijn Just Revealed the Surprising Perk of Playing Mystique Again After 20 Years in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Some Marvel comebacks require little more than signing a contract and stepping in front of a camera. Others come with a physical transformation so demanding it practically becomes its own headline, and few characters in blockbuster history have demanded more from an actor than Mystique’s scale-covered, blue-skinned design.
That history made Rebecca Romijn’s return to the role for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ a particularly interesting case study in how far visual effects have evolved since the character’s original heyday. Romijn spent countless hours in prosthetics and paint the first time around, and fans have been curious just how different the process looks two decades later.
Rebecca Romijn was relieved that she didn’t have to spend much time in the makeup chair to become Mystique for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, she explained, “Apparently, they were no longer interested in waiting for actors to be processed, so it was much faster.”
That shift marks a dramatic change from the original ‘X-Men’ trilogy, when Romijn’s call time would often begin around midnight so she could be camera-ready by 9 a.m., covered head to toe in layers of paint and prosthetics. This time, the production reportedly leaned on faster methods to get her into character, sparing her the marathon hours that once defined bringing Mystique to life.
Even with that shorter process, Romijn has acknowledged there was an upside to the original grueling routine. She’s previously said that all those hours transforming into Mystique for the first three ‘X-Men’ films helped put her in exactly the right headspace to play a character as angry as the shapeshifting mutant, something the faster modern process couldn’t quite replicate.
The revelation came during a post-Hall H interview at Comic-Con, where Romijn sat down alongside fellow original ‘X-Men’ star Kelsey Grammer and Robert Downey Jr., who now plays Doctor Doom in the MCU. Downey spoke warmly about having Romijn and Grammer back on set, noting how much their presence energized the rest of the cast during filming.
Romijn is one of several original ‘X-Men’ actors reprising their roles for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ joining Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. Their return marks a significant crossover moment, bringing Fox’s original mutant universe directly into the fold alongside Marvel Studios’ existing roster of heroes.
Romijn has described her return to the role as “very surreal,” having previously admitted to experiencing vivid, regressive dreams during the shoot as her brain worked to reconcile playing a character she first portrayed 25 years ago. Despite the years apart, she’s said she went back into the role with “full ownership” of the character, feeling she knows Mystique deeply enough not to need the same preparation process as before.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, the reduced makeup time for Mystique offers just one small glimpse into how differently this massive crossover film has come together compared to the effects-heavy blockbusters that first introduced these characters to audiences.
