Rick Riordan and Angela Robinson Are Bringing ‘The Kane Chronicles’ to Disney+

Rick Riordan’s mythology-driven book franchises have become one of Disney’s most reliable streaming success stories in recent years, with ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ proving that faithful, well-crafted adaptations of his work can genuinely resonate with modern audiences. That success has naturally raised the question of which of his other beloved series might get the same treatment next.

For years, one particular trilogy seemed destined for a very different path entirely. Development on an Egyptian mythology-based adaptation had bounced around Hollywood for the better part of a decade, first as a planned film franchise before quietly falling apart and leaving fans wondering if it would ever make it to screens at all.

Rick Riordan and Angela Robinson will create ‘The Kane Chronicles’ series for Disney+, according to Nexus Point News. 20th Television has acquired the rights to the bestselling trilogy, with Riordan and Robinson developing the project for the streamer after previous plans for a Netflix film series fell through.

Robinson brings a strong television pedigree to the project, having previously directed two episodes of Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’ and written for both ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ and ‘True Blood.’ While sources couldn’t confirm whether she’ll also direct episodes of ‘The Kane Chronicles,’ her prior directing work on genre-adjacent projects makes that a strong possibility going forward.

‘The Kane Chronicles’ originally began development as a trilogy of Netflix films, but those plans were shelved after spending years in development without moving forward. Riordan later revealed the rights had reverted back to him, at which point he and his wife Becky Riordan began exploring other options that ultimately led to this new television deal at Disney+.

The trilogy, consisting of ‘The Red Pyramid,’ ‘The Throne of Fire,’ and ‘The Serpent’s Shadow,’ follows siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, magicians descended from the pharaohs Narmer and Ramses the Great, as they contend with Egyptian gods who still interact with the modern world. The series is set in the same shared universe as Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson’ and ‘Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard’ franchises.

That shared universe connection could open the door for crossover storytelling down the line, given that both ‘Percy Jackson’ and ‘Kane Chronicles’ already have supplementary stories featuring characters from each series. With ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ having already established itself as one of Disney+’s strongest performers outside the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, boasting a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, a potential crossover feels like a natural next step should both shows continue to succeed.

No casting, showrunner, or premiere date details have been confirmed yet, and the project has not been officially announced by Disney. Still, landing at 20th Television alongside ‘Percy Jackson’ gives ‘The Kane Chronicles’ a clear path forward after years of false starts.

For fans who’ve been waiting over a decade to see Carter and Sadie Kane’s story brought to life properly, this news marks the clearest sign yet that Disney is fully committed to expanding Riordan’s mythological universe well beyond just one franchise.
