Rumors: R-Rated Animated Venom Project in Development at Sony

Share:

The concept of an extended Spider-Man universe under Sony’s purview originated in 2013, with plans for spin-off films, particularly one centered on Venom, emerging after ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ However, due to the film’s underwhelming reception, Sony shelved these plans and joined forces with Marvel Studios in 2015. Since then, Spider-Man has become a prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Despite generally lackluster reviews for films within the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU), such as ‘Morbius,’ the SSU persisted and currently boasts a slew of live-action and animated projects in the works, focusing on both Spider-Man’s supporting characters and adversaries. ‘Madame Web’ is set to release on February 14th, but despite extensive marketing, the film has generated minimal interest with a projected low box office performance. Following ‘Madame Web,’ anticipation builds for ‘Kraven The Hunter’ on August 30, 2024, and ‘Venom 3’ on November 3, 2024.

The SSU continues to expand, with rumors circulating about another animated project centered on Venom currently in development. While details remain scant, it is confirmed to carry an R rating, adding an intriguing dimension to the evolving SSU landscape.

All in all, Venom stands out as Sony’s most successful venture in transforming a Spider-Man supporting character into a thriving franchise. The film achieved significant global box office success, raking in $213.5 million in the United States and Canada, coupled with an impressive $642.5 million in other territories, resulting in a total worldwide gross of $856.1 million. With a production budget ranging between $100–116 million, the movie needed to surpass approximately $450 million to break even. Subsequently, it was disclosed that the film generated a net profit of $246.9 million, factoring in all expenses and revenues, securing ‘Venom’ as the sixth-most profitable release of 2018.

The triumph extended with ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage,’ concluding its theatrical run as the top-grossing film in 2021, notably amid the pandemic. The future success of ‘Venom 3’ is uncertain, and I am confident that the fate of the rumored animated project hinges on the performance of the upcoming movie.
