Ryan Condal Finally Breaks His Silence on the Rhaenyra-Daenerys Comparison Fans Won’t Stop Making
‘House of the Dragon’ has spent three seasons building toward chaos, and the Season 3 finale delivered exactly that. The episode, dubbed the Battle of Tumbleton and following the earlier Battle of the Gullet from episode one, pushed Rhaenyra Targaryen toward decisions that establish a path of no return heading into the final season. Fans watching Emma D’Arcy’s performance this season have noticed the queen slipping further from the sympathetic figure she once was.
The finale saw HBO’s prequel lose what many consider its moral center when Helaena Targaryen, played by Phia Saban, took her own life by jumping from her window in the Red Keep after being left alone. Her death came after a season marked by ominous visions and deep depression tied to her separation from her young daughter, Jaehaera, and it was Queen Rhaenyra who discovered the aftermath just before the episode closed.
That devastating turn is exactly what has fueled comparisons online between Rhaenyra and her infamous descendant, Daenerys Targaryen, whose own fiery collapse defined the ending of the original ‘Game of Thrones’ series. Showrunner Ryan Condal addressed the parallel directly during a press conference, saying he welcomes viewers drawing connections between the two queens and expects mirroring and echoes across both shows, some intentional and some subliminal. He framed it as part of a larger theme running through the entire ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ universe, namely how the pursuit of power can corrupt good people, turn already corrupted people into outright villains, or simply destroy someone the way it did Viserys.
Emma D’Arcy has been just as candid about where this leaves Rhaenyra heading into the final season. Speaking about Helaena’s death and its meaning for the queen’s reign during a press conference attended by ScreenRant, D’Arcy explained that Helaena represented the moral heart of the show, the rare character with proximity to power who remained uncontaminated by it, and that her death effectively seals Rhaenyra’s fate with no route back to a more moderate form of leadership.
That loss of Helaena also strips away Rhaenyra’s last tether to the philosophy of ruling that her father, Viserys, once instilled in her, a philosophy she leaned on as a teenager and one that helped convince him to name her his heir in the first place. Without that anchor, the show appears to be setting up a queen who no longer has any interest in restraint.
HBO confirmed back in January that the upcoming fourth season will be the show’s last, following what Condal had already told reporters back in August 2024, and that final run is currently expected to premiere in 2028. That gives fans a long wait to see whether Rhaenyra’s descent plays out as tragically as the parallel Condal himself acknowledged.
