Ryan Reynolds Explains His Choice of “The Ugliest Dog” for Deadpool Variant

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is the most anticipated MCU release for several reasons. Firstly, it marks the first “R”-rated MCU film and introduces Deadpool to the MCU. Secondly, it promises numerous cameos and variants.
While fans eagerly await cameos from beloved ‘X-Men’ franchise characters, the movie will also feature a plethora of Deadpool variants.
As of now, only a handful have been confirmed, some through trailers and merchandise. One of them is Dogpool, Deadpool’s furry variant, portrayed by a canine named Peggy. Notably, Peggy earned the title of Britain’s Ugliest Dog. Reynolds confessed in a recent interview with Empire that this is precisely why he selected her—it was love at first sight.
She won the award for Britain’s Ugliest Dog. The reason why I was a huge proponent for her was because she feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson.
Reynolds also elaborated on how Dogpool evolved from a small joke into a significant character in the movie.
It was, just like many things during the writing process, a tiny little afterthought, and it grew. It was one of those things where you just keep listening to the movie, and Dogpool became a staple.
Since the movie’s marketing campaign started, Peggy has gained a considerable following. The tiny Deadpool variant now has its own Instagram account, brimming with adorable photos.
In the comics, Dogpool originates from Earth-103173 and has a rather tragic backstory. Originally named Wilson, he was subjected to an animal testing program involving Mascara X, a peculiar cosmetic that had unique properties. Exposure to toxic Mascara X altered Wilson’s molecular structure, granting him a healing factor akin to Wade Wilson’s.
Dumped into a dumpster, Wilson’s healing factor revived him, allowing him to escape by gnawing through the garbage bag. He then lived as a stray until he was struck by a circus truck. The driver, noticing his remarkable abilities, made him the star attraction of the circus. Eventually, Dogpool was recruited by Deadpool for his Deadpool Corps.
