Sam Wilson’s Avengers Finally Look Like a Team in New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Footage

For years, a recurring joke across the MCU has been the lack of a clear Avengers team. That changed when ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ ended with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson deciding to restart Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, while ‘Thunderbolts*’ introduced a rival group that would come to be known as the New Avengers. The setup pointed toward a clash in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

Sam would clearly need more than just Joaquin Torres at his side. At the end of ‘Thunderbolts*’, Sam had even filed a copyright claim against the other team for the rights to the Avengers name while assembling his own roster.

Now fans have a fresh look at that roster in action. A new image shared by Cosmic Marvel shows Mackie’s Captain America front and center, his shield at his back, flanked by Danny Ramirez’s Falcon and Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi. The trio stands together with serious expressions, looking every bit like a unit ready for battle.

The image backs up what Marvel has been hinting at for months. Marvel previously named 6 Avengers for the film, listing Sam Wilson, Thor, Ant-Man, Falcon, Shang-Chi, and Loki together. A Disney marketing event also implied that Shang-Chi is a member of Sam’s Avengers team.

Official character descriptions have reinforced Sam’s status as leader. Those descriptions say he has assembled the Avengers and leads a diverse group of heroes as 3 different universes collide, while Joaquin is back in action and ready to fly alongside Captain America’s team.

For Shang-Chi fans, this is a big moment. Liu is reprising the role he first played in 2021’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, and his return has been a long time coming. Back when the film was known as ‘The Kang Dynasty’, word was that Shang-Chi would have a lead role.

It’s been great news that the character wasn’t sidelined after Marvel moved away from that storyline. Some fans believe a confident Shang-Chi, bolstered by the power of the Ten Rings, would be a valuable addition to Sam’s group.

His role could be sizable. Liu has spoken about working with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen on the film, suggesting Shang-Chi spends time alongside the X-Men’s Professor X and Magneto.

Recent leaks point to even more crossover action. Upcoming ‘Marvel Snap’ cards appear to pair Gambit with Shang-Chi and Sam Wilson with Nightcrawler, alongside duos like Sue Storm and Namor and M’Baku with The Thing.

Those pairings hint at how the film will mix heroes from different universes. The X-Men and Avengers could clash before realizing Doom is the real threat, or they may team up early to gain an advantage against his forces.

The image arrives at an interesting moment for Sam. With Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers, some fans worried Sam could be overshadowed. Promotional material has consistently kept the shield and the leadership firmly with Mackie’s hero, and this new image does the same.

For now, the trio of Captain America, Falcon and Shang-Chi offers a clear glimpse at the Avengers’ new core. Fans will see whether Sam’s team can hold the line against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom when ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18.

Are you excited to see Sam Wilson lead his own Avengers team in Avengers: Doomsday?
