Sam Witwer Teases ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ Season 2 Finale And It Sounds Pretty Epic

Darth Maul has carried plenty of Star Wars stories on his back since his animated debut, but ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ marked the first time the former Sith apprentice got an entire series built around him. The show was announced by creator and executive director Dave Filoni in early April 2026, with the first season premiering just days later. Sam Witwer, the actor who has voiced Maul across multiple Star Wars animated projects for years, leads the series as both star and consulting producer.

The first season landed with the kind of reception that makes renewals easy decisions. ‘Shadow Lord’ currently holds an impressive 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Disney moved quickly to confirm a second season was already in the works. The series follows Maul as he rebuilds his crime syndicate during the height of the Empire’s reign, and fans were promised more adventures with the former Sith Lord once the Season 2 renewal went public in April.

That excitement carried straight into FAN EXPO Anaheim, where Witwer joined the rest of the ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ cast for a panel celebrating the show’s first run. According to Star Wars Holocron’s recap of the appearance, Witwer offered a brief but tantalizing tease about how the upcoming season wraps up, simply calling it “pretty epic.” It is the kind of vague but loaded comment that tends to send fandom into overdrive, especially for a character with as much built up history as Maul.

Witwer has been careful not to give away too much about the timeline, even while hinting that the wait will not stretch on forever. Speaking with The Direct, he explained that he already knows when the season is coming out but is essentially forbidden from sharing it, adding that the team has been working on it for a while. He has also spoken about the weight of carrying forward what George Lucas built, describing the work as a real responsibility tied to a mythology that matters deeply to longtime fans.

Behind the scenes, the pressure to deliver appears to be coming from the top as well. Dave Filoni reportedly pushed the ‘Shadow Lord’ crew to make the second season the best thing they have ever produced and to keep pushing everything further. Given the animation style ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ has been praised for, that kind of ambition likely explains why a release window has not been locked in publicly yet.

The cast returning for Season 2 includes Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, alongside Wagner Moura, Richard Ayoade and Dennis Haysbert, with the new chapter continuing from Lucasfilm Animation following the series premiere on Disney+. Much of the first season centered on Maul’s attempts to mold Devon into his next apprentice, and that dynamic seems primed to deepen as the story moves forward. Industry comparisons to past Disney+ Star Wars animated shows suggest a wait of around a year would not be unusual, though Witwer’s comments hint fans may not have to be quite that patient.

With Maul promising an epic send off to whatever comes next and the cast already buzzing about it on the convention circuit, the anticipation for ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ Season 2 is only growing. What do you think Witwer means by “pretty epic,” and where do you want to see Maul’s story go from here?
