Samara Weaving Just Gave X-Men Fans Their First Taste of Emma Frost’s Icy Style
Marvel’s mutant reboot has been quietly building momentum for months, with director Jake Schreier and studio chief Kevin Feige working through an extensive audition process before locking in their first major star. Frost is a telepathic Mutant who first showed up in X-Men comics in the 1980s and has evolved over the years, going from supervillain to a key member of the X-Men. On the film side, she most recently was played by January Jones in 2011’s ‘X-Men: First Class.’
That long wait for a new take on the character ended when word broke that ‘Ready or Not’ star Samara Weaving had landed the role. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige met with a number of candidates before landing on Weaving, with Schreier and Marvel executives reportedly meeting and auditioning actors all summer for a number of roles, Frost being one of the hardest to cast. The finalists tested just after the Fourth of July, and Weaving’s audition was reportedly “too hard to beat.”
Now, fan account That COMICBOOK Guy has stirred the pot again, sharing a pair of photos of Weaving in a white cardigan set paired with matching stockings, calling it a tease of her Emma Frost era. The all white palette and blonde waves immediately drew comparisons to the White Queen’s signature look, even though nothing about the shoot has been officially tied to the film. Still, the timing was enough to send the post circulating widely among X-Men fans hungry for any hint of what Weaving’s Frost might look like on screen.
The reaction to her casting overall has skewed positive since Deadline’s report first surfaced. One fan wrote that “the White Queen has officially arrived,” predicting Weaving is going to crush the role, while another argued that if she nails the attitude, fans will forget every fancast overnight. Not everyone was sold immediately, with a handful of users grumbling that Marvel seemed to be filling roles without much vision, but that grumbling has largely been drowned out by enthusiasm.
Part of that enthusiasm comes from just how well Weaving is seen to fit the part physically and tonally. Speculation is already running rampant about what the White Queen’s role in the movie will look like, with some wondering if she could be introduced as an antagonist tied to the Hellfire Club or as an ally standing alongside Professor X’s team. Emma Frost is described as an immensely powerful telepath whose secondary mutation lets her body turn into organic diamond, and she is known for a razor sharp wit paired with a cold, calculating personality.
Weaving joins a growing mutant roster for the untitled project, with Sadie Sink recently confirmed in the cast as well. The film is expected to arrive in 2028, giving Marvel plenty of runway to build out the rest of its Hellfire Club and X-Men lineup before cameras roll. For now, all anyone has to go on are casting reports, fan art, and photos like these that fans are eager to read as clues.
Whether or not this particular white outfit ends up having anything to do with her actual Emma Frost costume, it has clearly done its job of keeping the hype alive. Do you think Samara Weaving already has the White Queen’s icy attitude down, or is this just a coincidence fans are running with?
