Few characters have been with the Marvel Cinematic Universe as long as Nick Fury. Samuel L. Jackson first appeared as the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director in the post-credits scene of ‘Iron Man’, greeting Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and setting the entire Avengers saga in motion.

Fans haven’t seen Fury on the big screen since 2023’s ‘The Marvels’, and his absence from the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ cast announcement left many wondering about his future. With the Multiverse Saga heading toward its finale, questions about which veterans would be there at the end have only grown louder.

Now Jackson has offered a clear answer. Speaking on the red carpet for ‘The Beast’, the actor revealed that Nick Fury will not appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ but will return in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

When the interviewer mentioned they hadn’t seen him as Fury in a while, Jackson replied, “Next movie… [The] movie after this one,” speaking to The Direct. The comment confirmed he is sitting out ‘Doomsday’ in favor of its sequel.

He was less forthcoming about plot details. “I have no idea. [Marvel] hasn’t told me anything, other than, ‘You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next,'” he explained. Marvel Studios has not yet officially announced Jackson’s return. Still, his comments are about as direct a confirmation as fans could hope for this far out.

Jackson’s remarks also put an end to an earlier report that Fury would appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. That film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, opens in theaters on December 18.

The news has also sparked questions about Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, who has not been confirmed for ‘Doomsday’ either. Some fans now believe she could be among several characters sitting out the first film before returning for the second.

‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is set to arrive on December 17, 2027, and is Marvel Studios’ only movie slated for that year. It will close out the Multiverse Saga and arrive nearly 20 years after ‘Iron Man’ launched the franchise.

The film will mark Jackson’s 13th MCU movie and his 16th MCU project overall, counting Fury’s appearances in 3 TV shows. Filming is expected to begin later this year. Jackson joins a growing list of confirmed ‘Secret Wars’ cast members, including Anthony Mackie, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Chris Evans and Simu Liu.

So far, Noah Jupe is the only new addition to the cast who isn’t returning from ‘Doomsday’, though his role remains unknown. It remains unclear whether Fury will play a major supporting part or something closer to a cameo. In the first 2 ‘Avengers’ films, he was heavily involved, while in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ his appearances were much smaller.

Since Jackson says Marvel hasn’t shared the story with him, fans have little to go on for now. Some speculate he could once again be the one organizing heroes against whatever threat Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom leaves behind.

Jackson’s casting was always a meta nod to the comics, since Nick Fury in ‘The Ultimates’ was drawn to resemble the ‘Pulp Fiction’ actor. Having him return for the Multiverse Saga’s final chapter would bring that history full circle.

The news quickly went viral after DiscussingFilm shared it on X, with fans celebrating the return and joking about Jackson’s blunt delivery. For many, a final ‘Avengers’ showdown without the man who assembled the team wouldn’t feel complete.
