‘Scream’ Star Melissa Barrera Would Return to ‘Scream’, but Only if Spyglass Loses the Keys to Woodsboro
Few exits in modern horror have been as messy or as widely debated as Melissa Barrera’s departure from ‘Scream’, and the question of a potential Melissa Barrera ‘Scream’ return has lingered ever since. The actress led the revived slasher franchise as Sam Carpenter before being abruptly removed, and fans have never quite let the story go.
Barrera starred in 2022’s ‘Scream’ and 2023’s ‘Scream VI’ before Spyglass Media Group fired her in November 2023 over social media posts about the war in Gaza. The company claimed her posts, which criticized Israel, were antisemitic. Shortly after her firing, she told The Hollywood Reporter she had learned never to say never, though a lot would need to happen for Sam to come back.
Nearly 3 years later, Barrera has finally spelled out exactly what that would take. During an interview with JustWatch, she said she would return to the franchise, but not with the company that currently holds the rights. Spyglass is a co-producer and the current rights holder, which makes her condition a significant one.
She was clear that her issue lies with the company rather than the films themselves. Barrera said she loves the franchise and had an amazing time making the movies, but explained that much of the hate and difficulty she has faced in recent years stems from Spyglass leadership labeling her something she is not. She added that the company never apologized, even after she was proven right.
Pop Crave’s post highlighting her comments drew attention on X. Barrera went further in the interview, saying that even an apology wouldn’t convince her to work with Spyglass again, and admitting she isn’t holding her breath. If the franchise ever moved into hands that better honor Wes Craven’s legacy, however, she indicated she would be open to it.

A sale seems unlikely at the moment. Spyglass holds the rights while Paramount distributes, and the studios moved quickly on an eighth film, hiring ‘Suits’ writers Lilla and Nora Zuckerman to pen the script in March. That puts the franchise firmly on a path that doesn’t include Sam Carpenter for now.
‘Scream 7’ was released earlier this year, and Barrera has made it clear she isn’t a fan of that sequel. Her comments don’t confirm any return, and there is no deal, casting announcement, or sign that Spyglass is preparing to give up the rights.
Barrera isn’t without allies connected to the series. Fellow franchise star Matthew Lillard recently said she was on the right side of history all along and expressed some regret over appearing in ‘Scream 7’. That kind of public backing from a legacy cast member has kept her story at the center of the fandom conversation.
The filmmakers behind her ‘Scream’ films also moved on. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence left the series after ‘Scream VI’ and then cast Barrera as the lead of ‘Abigail’ for Universal in 2024. Their continued collaboration shows her working relationships beyond Spyglass remain strong.
Online, many fans responded with frustration toward the studio. One reply under Pop Crave’s post argued that Spyglass fumbled the franchise and that the door remaining open on Barrera’s side is what really matters. Another called it heartbreaking to watch a talented actor get blacklisted for standing up for what’s right, questioning why she would ever want to work with a company that treated her that way.
For now, Sam Carpenter’s future remains tied to a rights situation that shows no sign of changing. But Barrera’s openness keeps a sliver of hope alive for fans who still see her as the heart of the new ‘Scream’ era.
