Sebastian Stan’s Recent Comments Have Us Questioning If He’s Returning as the Winter Soldier in ‘Thunderbolts*’

Thunderbolts* is just one of several exciting MCU projects set to debut next year, and fans have plenty of reasons to be enthusiastic about the film. It will introduce a brand-new team of misfits, similar to DC’s Suicide Squad.

Additionally, the movie will feature the introduction of Marvel’s most powerful superhero, Sentry. Many of the MCU’s anti-heroes and former villains will also return, with Sebastian Stan reprising his role as Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, being one of the most popular characters.

Bucky Barnes was first introduced as Steve Rogers’ best friend and fellow soldier during World War II, serving as a supportive character in Steve’s transformation into Captain America. Unfortunately, he is captured by Hydra during a mission with Steve, leading to his presumed death.

It is later revealed that Bucky was taken by Hydra and turned into a deadly assassin. Fortunately, thanks to Rogers’ unwavering loyalty, much of the damage has been undone, allowing Bucky to have one of the most compelling redemption arcs in the MCU.

Now that Stan is expected to reprise his role in Thunderbolts, a team known for bending the rules, fans are speculating about the possibility of seeing Barnes revert to his Winter Soldier persona once again.

Recently, Stan appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his new film, The Apprentice, in which he portrays a young Donald Trump. During the interview, he was asked if fans can expect to see him return as Bucky Barnes or the Winter Soldier.

Kimmel: I do have one question for you, at the end of the trailer, you’ve got a gun, and you’re shooting at the other characters, and um, are you Bucky Barnes or are you Winter Soldier in that scene?

Stan: I think a little bit of both. It’s such an odd group you know. We talk about the movie as being kind of like, ‘St. Elmo’s Fire,’ or the other great John Hughes movie, I’m blanking on right now.

It’s just the oddest group, and they come together and hopefully, they don’t kill each other, and you know, maybe I don’t kill them first.

Given the nature of the film, we certainly anticipate Stan will highlight the traits of both characters.
