Shawn Levy was Surprised by Henry Cavill’s Acceptance of the Role in Deadpool & Wolverine
Deadpool & Wolverine was released over a week ago and has proven to be a success on multiple fronts. The movie has been well-received by audiences and is breaking box-office records, with the potential to become Disney’s most profitable film of the year.
This success is largely attributed to the return of Marvel legacy characters from previous franchises predating the MCU, as well as the many references to various Deadpool and Wolverine variants.
One of the Wolverine variants in the movie is played by Henry Cavill. Although Cavill’s presence is subtle—just a muscular Wolverine by a motorcycle—it wasn’t until Ryan Reynolds made a reference to Cavill’s unsuccessful DCEU career that fans realized it was him. The revelation came when Cavill turned towards the camera, confirming his role.
Rumors about Cavill’s involvement as Wolverine had circulated for months before the film’s release, so his appearance wasn’t a major surprise to fans. As Deadpool put it, “it just feels right.”
Director Shawn Levy recently shared that Cavill didn’t require much convincing to join the film. In an interview with Variety, Levy revealed that Cavill agreed to the role immediately.
If we’re going to talk about him, we must call him by his actual credited name, the Cavillerine, which Ryan coined. I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with that term. He said “yes” right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful. It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he’s appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero.
Despite the fun atmosphere on set, Cavill had a tough time, reportedly feeling ill after inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight.
Fortunately, everything worked out in the end, and fans were thrilled to see him in the role.
