San Diego Comic-Con weekend is bringing us a lot of juicy news and announcements, and one of them is the official trailer for the upcoming DC movie Shazam: Fury of the Gods, a sequel to 2019’s DC movie Shazam! starring Zachary Levi in the titular role. The original movie was released in April 2019 and it was praised for being a fresh take on the DCEU. The movie grossed $366 million against the budget of $80-100 million, which was successful enough for WB and DC to greenlit the sequel.
David F. Sandberg returns as the director for the sequel, and Henry Gayden, the writer of the first movie, wrote the sequel with known Fast & Furious writer Chris Morgan. Zachary Levi returns to play the role of the titular superhero, and Asher Angel reprises the role of Billy Batson. The movie was initially set to be released in June 2023, before it was moved up to December 2022. At the recent panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, the official trailer has been revealed! Check it out below:
Jack Dylan Grazer reprises the role of Freddy Freeman, and Djimon Hounsou returns as the ancient wizard Shazam. West Side Story star Rachel Zegler joined the cast in an undisclosed role, while Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu joined as Hespera and Kalypso, daughters of Atlas, who are set to be the main villainesses of the sequel.
DC Extended Universe is still trying to find its way after the idea of Snyderverse and building the shared universe the Marvel way crumbled. The theatrical release of 2017’s Justice League flopped badly at the box office, and despite the director’s cut Zack Snyder’s Justice League, WB has no intention to Restore the Snyderverse, which is something that fans have been asking for ever since ZSJL was released on HBOMax.
Currently, WB is focusing on standalone movies, and they’re hoping for the next year’s The Flash to reshape the DCEU as a shared universe. Before the Shazam! sequel, the Black Adam movie starring Dwayne Johnson is set to be released next October, and the crossover between Levi’s Shazam and Johnson’s Black Adam is set to happen eventually, most likely in the third Shazam movie. We can only hope Fury of the Gods will be successful enough for another sequel considering it will be released only five days after Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster which will surely crush the box office.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to be released on December 21, 2022.
