‘Silo’: Who Is Lukas Kyle & What Happens to Him?

So far, the most important character we’ve met in the Silo series was Juliette Nichols. She is the sheriff of Silo 18, and she will soon learn that she can’t trust anybody. The latest episode, titled “Truth,” showed us some insight into Juliette’s past but also introduced one character that will be very important down the line. One evening, Juliette was visiting the already closed cafeteria and ran into a guy watching the stars named Lukas Kyle. So, who is Lukas & what happens to him?
Editor’s Note: Please beware that the following paragraphs contain heavy spoilers for the events that took place in the Silo Series of books that the show was based on. If you want to avoid spoilers, now would be a good time to stop reading!
Lukas Kyle was an I.T. worker and played a huge role in Juliette’s search for truth. Bernard groomed him to take over as the head of Silo 18 and ultimately was the one communicating with Donald Keene back at Silo 1. Lukas Kyle died when Silo 18’s airlock was opened. For most of the series, Lukas was a primary romantic interest of Juliette Nichols.
Now that we’ve covered in summary who Lukas Kyle is and what is his ultimate fate in the series, it’s time to analyze it in more detail. If you’re interested in more, stay with us and keep reading!
Lukas and Juliette were romantic partners
We know that Juliette was still grieving and looking for justice for her late boyfriend named, George Wilkins, who was killed because of his connection to the relics. Still, she found that spark again with a man named Lukas Kyle. She met Lukas in the cafeteria one night while he watched the stars; for now, this is his most defining characteristic. Another notable thing about him is the fact that he works at I.T.
Even if you haven’t read the books, you know that something sinister is taking place at the I.T. department of the Silo, and Lukas will, in the future, play a huge part in it. Luka and Juliette will eventually become romantic partners, in secrecy, of course, and he will ultimately be of huge help when it comes to discovering Silo’s secrets. After Juliette goes “to clean,” Lukas will even contemplate suicide. His hope will return when he hears that she has managed to survive.
Lukas eventually replaces Bernard as the head of Silo 18
After Juliette’s scandalous departure from Silo and the fact that she survived the cleaning, which is unheard of. Bernard will shift his focus on Lukas and offer him the opportunity to become his “shadow.” As you know in the Silo, shadows are “apprentices,” if you are someone’s “shadow,” this means that you are trained to ultimately replace this person in their job when the time comes.
Bernard went as far as to lock Lukas in the room beneath the servers and left him with two important books to read, which in general, govern the way of life in the Silo. The books in question are “Order” & “Legacy.” Reading the books, Lukas’ worldview will change, and he will question what is the right thing to do. Throughout his stay in isolation, he will keep regular contact with Juliette, who was at that time in Silo 17, alive and well.
At the same time, the storm is brewing in Silo 18, with many people questioning the current leadership of Silo, Lukas will at one point be sent to clean and almost die, but Juliette saves him at the last second.
Lukas is likewise recommended to assume the position of the Head of Silo 18 by Donald Keene himself after Bernard’s demise at the hands of rebells, and the two are in regular contact.
What happens to Lukas in the end?
Lukas dies in the third book of the Silo series, named Dust. Due to an unfortunate, albeit short fight, between Donald Keene and Thurman, the airlock in Silo 18 is opened, and the toxic gas floods Silo 18. Many people died that day, including Lukas Kyle, who never made it out alive. Juliette was saved at the last moment, being pushed into a massive digger. The group of survivors, including Juliette, found their salvation in abandoned Silo 17.
All of this took place after Juliette and Lukas figure out that the outside is not actually toxic. It’s only designed to look that way as toxic gasses are being pumped in the air outside Silos to keep the people from rebelling.
