Simu Liu Shocked by ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast Reveal During Livestream:”That Was a Total Surprise”

Recently some massive news dropped regarding the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. During a 5-hour stream, Marvel Studios revealed 27 names that will appear in the highly anticipated crossover movie.
Some names, like Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, were expected, especially considering Fantastic Four history with Doctor Doom. Other names were more surprising, with nearly the entire Thunderbolts* cast, excluding Taskmaster, set to have a role in the film. Additionally, Lewis Pullman’s Sentry was confirmed to appear.
However, the biggest shock came when former X-Men stars like Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart were revealed to be reprising their iconic roles, alongside James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming.
Turns out, it wasn’t just fans who were surprised and excited by the massive cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday. Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi in the MCU and is also part of the lineup, was just as shocked, and beyond thrilled, to learn he’d be sharing the screen with Hollywood legends like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
“I didn’t even know who is in this film and I kinda knew that I would be involved in some capacity,” Liu stated. “It wasn’t until the big announcements that I even knew that Sir Ian and Sir Patrick were in it. Like that was a total surprise to me and very shocking. Of course, every name that got revealed had an added kind of meaning for me.”
“Obviously I was watching it as a fan,” Liu continued, “but for me each one of these people is somebody that I’ll meet on set and ultimately get to work with and I think that’s such an incredible thing.“
Liu also explained that it was tough keeping it a secret all this time.
“I mean it’s tough, especially when you are premiering the movie and you know you have to go out in front of press you know the questions inevitably are gonna come so you just have to like toe the company line, play coy, and hope that no one asks any probing questions and you don’t slip up.” He said.
Liu also used the opportunity to mention two of the most notable leakers along the lines of MCU stars.
“You know we all know the Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo moments, infamous moments that have happened and none of us want to be that.” He continued.
Fans have been asking for a Shang-Chi sequel for a while now, and although the movie is currently postponed in terms of development, at least we’re going to see the main star on the big screen soon.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026, as part of Phase Six of the MCU.
