‘Slow Horses’ Season 6 Episode 5 Recap and Ending Explained: River Buys Sid Time as Diana’s Kazan Deal Unravels
The latest episode of ‘Slow Horses’ picks up right where the service station violence left off. Jim and Jane abducted Sid after killing JK Coe, while Diana Taverner quietly agreed to sacrifice her to appease the Russians. What follows is a tense chase that also pulls the cover off the decision at the center of the season.
This ‘Slow Horses’ recap and ending explained looks at how Sid and River survive their captors, why Diana’s deal matters so much, and where the penultimate chapter leaves Slough House. Apple’s official logline describes a season in which Diana embroils the Slow Horses in a fatally high stakes game of retaliation and revenge. The latest installment shows what that revenge has cost.
River and Sid’s Escape From Jim and Jane
Sid does not wait to be rescued. The registration plate bearing River’s name, which she bought in the previous episode, becomes a weapon with its sharp edges. She uses it to cause a crash that appears to kill Jane outright.
River, who commandeered a civilian’s car to follow, arrives at a critical moment. Jim tries to drown Sid, River intervenes, and Sid hits Jim with a rock before the two of them drown him in the lake. One recap argues that Sid would have died had River not shown up when he did.
The relief does not last. MI5 agents arrive to collect the pair, but they are still acting on Diana’s orders, and instead of the Park they take River and Sid to a private airfield and military hangar. Jane’s body has also gone missing from the crashed car, which the agents do not notice.
Diana Taverner’s Kazan Deal Explained
The hangar is where the truth comes out. River persuades the agents to let him make a phone call, and Sid gets Diana on the line. Diana tells her she could not spare the agent used to carry out the Kazan hit, but she can spare Sid.
The reasoning is bureaucratic and cold. Because the mission was unofficial, Diana’s operative needed a cover, so she used Sid’s identity. When the agency refused to fund a revenge mission against the Russians, Diana arranged the operation herself with an outside investor.
Sid is to be traded to Vassily, head of the GRU, as a consolation prize. She is told she will board a flight to Bulgaria rather than Russia, which means Vassily could do anything to her. Diana advises Sid to accept her fate.
Lamb Confronts Diana Over the Money
Away from the hangar, Jackson Lamb has been working on his own theory. He finds Diana in her office and calls her out for taking money from Damien Cantor. Although Diana still feigns ignorance, Lamb has already pieced together the sequence of events.
The fallout explains why his team keeps being targeted. Diana wiped Sid’s records from the Park archives, which drew attention to Slough House and left Lamb’s agents turning up dead. Lamb then has Roddy Ho look into Diana’s dealings with Cantor.
Diana is also running out of room at headquarters. An oversight committee hearing correctly uncovers her mission and the breach of protocol that came with it. One reviewer concludes that her position at MI5 is now under serious threat.
What the Ending Means for the Finale
The closing moments turn on a sacrifice. River tells Sid to run while he stays behind to buy her some time. He then drives back toward the agents and allows himself to be captured.
That leaves the situation unresolved. River is in the hands of the operatives, and Sid’s ultimate fate remains uncertain. With only one episode left, River captured, Sid on the run and Diana’s deal exposed, the season has plenty to settle.
The answers arrive soon. Apple releases one episode each Wednesday, with the finale scheduled for October 21, 2026. The season adapts Mick Herron’s novels Joe Country and Slough House, so the endgame has plenty of source material to draw on. Do you think River’s gamble gives Sid enough of a head start to survive Diana’s Russian bargain before the finale, or has he simply handed MI5 a second problem to bury?
